how do I clean or wash engine?
Aug 16, 2007 by j b | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
the engine in my truck is really dirty.. can I just go to carwash and spray the engine out with water? I'm just wondering getting water into the battery or other electrical equipment...
It would be best to cover the main electrical components first, then after washing the engine off, take it out on the road for a short drive until it gets to normal operating temperature to ensure that all water would be evaporated off through either the wind/air passing around it or by the temperature of the engine. Be sure to cover the carburetor also as water in the fuel might cause it to be difficult or fail to start after washing it.

try using a degreaser and then with a hose or pressure washer try getting it off try to avoid the electrical as much as possible like the distributor if it does get wet it will just dely the start of the car the first 2 times or so if that

JB, Stop being a worry wart and take your car or truck to a local hand spray car wash and let the entire engine compartment have a bath with the high pressure soap.
FEAR NOTHING. I mean everything except an exposed air cleaner. Get the radiator front and rear, battery ignition wires, plugs, valve covers, heads, block, intake manifold, firewall coolant recovery tank, distributor, exhaust manifolds and as much of the block as you can. Be careful not to get the insulation material under the hood wet as the crap will drip all over your new fresh clean motor and associated parts.
Don't bother with stinking degrease spray on products that you spray your garden hose on when your finished. All the water soluble crap will sit in your driveway.
