Nevada first to approve guidelines for self-driving cars
21.05.12
Last week the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles became the first of any state to establish rules for self-driving cars. The state, which mandated these regulations in a bill passed last spring , has been preparing for advances in automobile technology. Last July, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval test-rode a self-driving car that Google is developing .
Though the rules may seem pre-emptive as the technology is not nearly advanced enough to need to be regulated yet, the state wants to have them in place so that they are prepared when the cars begin to hit the market.
The guidelines require companies testing the cars to secure a bond of between $1 and $3 million, specify their intentions, and provide both details about and data from testing to the state. For extra safety measures, two passengers must ride in vehicles being tested. Cars produced for commercial purposes must be operated by people with special licenses to drive them and contain a “black box” to collect data.
GPS Tracking System & Pay-As-You-Drive Insurance Can Reduce Auto Premiums
21.05.12
Recently ABI Research predicted that the number of PAYD users is expected to soar in the coming years, growing at an annual growth rate of 90 percent a year. That means that from just 1.85 million users in 2010, there will be a whopping 89 million in 2017, according to the NY Daily News.
How Much Can Drivers Save?
Pay-as-you-drive vehicle insurance programs really help drivers who do less than 15,000 miles per year. The less you drive, the higher the discount, which can range from 8% to 54%, says Tim Hogan, GMAC’s vice president of national accounts.
Mileage information is collected by a GPS tracking system , and your discount grows for every 2,500 miles fewer you drive. For example, someone who drives between 10,001 and 12,500 miles might save 18%, while someone who drives 7,501 to 10,000 miles per year might save 26% off standard rates.
GMAC Insurance, in collaboration with OnStar, offers a discount for those who have a GM vehicle equipped with OnStar and drive fewer than 15,000 miles per year.

can i use automobile GPS in non US countries?
Jun 12, 2008 by monsta | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
Am planning to get one but in the Philippines am not sure if GPS works. Is there a fee to using GPS?
The GPS will work, it is worldwide. So you will get position in terms of latitude and longitude.
The maps may not work.
billrussell42 | Jun 12, 2008
you will need to download the maps for the Philippines. yes, it's free
Murzy | Jun 12, 2008
Most GPS sold in USA only have USA map (database).
So you really have to check with your specific GPS.
Good Luck...
Lover not a Fighter | Jun 12, 2008
no just buying one and upates cost money
shelby oz | Jun 12, 2008
Get Phillipines mapping.
A GPS set up for local mapping USA will NOT give accurate lat/ long in the Phillipines, any more than an aircraft GPS will, unless the local coding (on all the maps) is entered into it.

K. Rankin says:
I have a garmin ique m4 which is a discontinued model, and it has an option to route for driving a truck. I used to drive a box truck for work in the baltimore/D.C. area and the truck route did steer me away from the roads commercial vehicles could not travel on. There are times when it will tell you to get on a road you shouldn't drive on, but that was extremely rare. I would suggest any of the garmin C series, the C530 is probably the cheapest one i've seen on amazon now at just under $200. I like the truck routing feature, and I would use it more than the car routing feature because it would take you on the bigger/wider roads which are easier to navigate on to begin with. I'm only guessing but it looks like the nuvi series uses the same user interface/software as the C series so it may have truck routing also.
I've got a Insignia Internet Connected model 20 with bluetooth on the way. It is a Best Buy only brand...and the only Internet connected GPS on the market right now. It originally sold for $599, but Best Buy is now selling it for $150.
I read a ton of reviews on it, and the general concensus was that at $599 it was way over priced.... but $150 is much better.
The pros of the device was obviously the Internet connection that alows you to google search for locations and automatically have google download the information to the device, if you have a bluetooth phone, it will also alow you to call the location handsfree through the GPS... as well, it will allow you to make and recieve phone calls through your phone on the GPS... this is one of the most affordable bluetooth GPS on the market. The Internet cononection also allows you get get up to the minute gas prices from gasbuddy.com and realtime traffic updates from 52 American cities.
The cons of the device are that the interface aren't as good compareably priced models. They aren't as "cartoony" and sharp. There have also been some complaints that the touch screen sometimes requires you to tap the screen twice.
The device is still very new on the market, just released the end of October, but being priced at $150 puts it in a great price range. If you are looking for the best graphics on the market with the most features, then this isn't for you... But if you are willing to sacrafice awesome graphics, and a ton of features... for functional graphics with only a couple very usefull features, then this is the GPS for you. Being a truck driver I'm sure the realtime gas prices and traffic conditioins, along with the ability to google search something you should really consider.

It is illegal to mount a gps unit in the automobile windshield?
Nov 07, 2008 by bluejessy | Posted in Car Audio
I heard that Windshield Mounting of GPS is going to be legalized in California, but I just not sure when this is going to happen, Do you know something about this? Still this illegal?
The provincial Highway Traffic Act prohibits having any object obstructing the driver's view through the windshield or windows.
Section 73(1) HTA states that "no person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway, with any sign, poster or other non-transparent material or object placed on the windshield or on any window of such motor vehicle; or with any object placed in, hung on or attached to the motor vehicle, in a manner that will obstruct the driver's view of the highway or any intersecting highway."
To avoid possibly running afoul of the law, it might be best to mount your GPS unit to the front of the dash (not on top) below the level of the windshield.
For safety, motorists should only rely on audio directions from the GPS rather than watching the screen when driving.
Charges under S. 73(1) HTA carry a $110 penalty. And, yes, before you write in, I'm aware that police themselves often have equipment (radar, large strobes etc.) mounted on their cruiser dashboard that blocks the driver's clear view of the road ahead. No exemption for police under this section of the HTA could be located.
Ontario Transportation Ministry :
Safe driving requires that you focus your attention on driving .
Navigation devices, when used properly, can make driving safer by helping to guide you to your destination with audio instructions as you drive. The risks associated with these devices typically occur when drivers try to manually reprogram them while driving.
Drivers who fail to pay attention to the driving task can face severe consequences.
For example, a "careless driving" conviction under S. 130 of the Highway Traffic Act carries a fine of up to $1,000, six demerit points, possible jail time, and a driver's licence suspension. Alternatively, a "dangerous driving" conviction under S. 249 of the Criminal Code of Canada carries a maximum $2,000 fine and up to five years in jail. The ministry will further examine this issue to see what next-generation driver distraction legislation could look like.

Barbie 101 | Nov 07, 2008
In 2 states but in 48 other it is legal
I Give Answers | Nov 07, 2008
I only know that it is currently illegal in CA.
amberazul14 | Nov 07, 2008
As long as it does not obstruct the drivers vision in any way whatsoever, its legal. This means you have to be able not see it when you look at your car's hood.
Davis F | Nov 07, 2008
No.But you dont want to put it in front of you.(obviously) place it by the mirror
Nick D | Nov 07, 2008
Yes in most states because it obstructs the view,
david m | Nov 07, 2008
I know that it is illegal in NJ because it obstructs your view. Anything on your windshield or in front of you is illegal here

Could somebody explain a GPS for an automobile?
Oct 22, 2008 by Pink08 | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
I keep getting lost in the city because of unannounced detours and want a GPS to help get me around. What is the best kind? What needs to be hooked up to it? Do I have to subscribe to some service? What's the best kind and is it best to buy one online?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
A GPS is a receiver for the Global Positioning System built for the military back in the 80's. There are 24 orbiting satellites that send data over radio frequencies to a receiver (GPS unit), that mathmatically determines your position on earth.
You do not subscribe to any service.
Just buy a unit with street directions included with detour capability.
Garmin, Megellan, and Tom Tom are a few of the good ones.
You can buy them online, and in stores.

Any recommendation for Automobile GPS system.?
Nov 29, 2006 by I C | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
I am thinking about getting automobile GPS system. This is for a professional person to visit a patient home (more than 3 homes a day). Voice guidance would be nice. I am not looking for the top of the line one. I am looking for a reasonable one to get a direction from one point to another.
Your recommendation by experience would be helpful and appreciated.
I just got a Garmin - the smallest one they have. Around $250.00 Wayyyyy worth it. You can check Overstock.com and/or e-bay and other retailers.
It speaks, and provides turn-by-turn directions. You can also view maps without going through the whole navigation process. You can save your favorite destinations. Search by area, food, hotel, gas, banks, etc.
