Supreme Court rules GPS tracking unconstitutional without a warrant; local ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision requires law enforcement agencies to obtain a search warrant before using a Global Positioning Satellite device to track a suspected criminal.
In the case of United States vs. Jones, Supreme Court Justices unanimously agreed on a decision Jan. 23 to overturn the cocaine-trafficking conviction of Antoine Jones of Washington, D.C., who was sentenced to life in prison.
Police did not have a warrant in place in 2005 when they used a GPS device to monitor his vehicle’s location over several weeks, using the evidence to help gain a conviction.
Local law enforcement agents said the change in law adds another step to their investigations, but that it won’t significantly impact how they do their jobs.
Detective Lt. Jeff Anthony is Section Commander of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET), which assists agencies in a six-county region with covert investigations, focusing on illegal drug activity.
GPS tracking ruling could impact Calif. arson case

The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled last month that police can't install GPS tracking technology on a suspect's vehicle without a warrant.
"In this case, the GPS tracking information is crucial," Griffith said.
As part of the investigation into Perkins-Grubbs, officials placed a GPS tracker on a vehicle he was driving on Sept. 29. They subsequently tracked his vehicle near several vegetation fires, allegedly including a third attempt to burn the Magalia Depot. He was arrested Oct. 4.
Perkins-Grubbs faces 20 felony counts for his alleged role in about 20 suspicious fires set on the upper ridge starting in late July and ending Oct. 3. Prosecutors allege he is responsible for fires that consumed the DeSabla Market in August and the Lovelock Inn in September, as well as multiple attempts on the depot.
The defendant was initially charged with eight counts, but deputy district attorney Corie Caraway said prosecutors added 12 additional counts following a preliminary hearing to determine whether there was probable cause to hold Perkins-Grubbs for trial. The new counts are for vegetation fires the defendant was allegedly involved in.
Possible alternative to buying an expensive gps tracker?

Instead of buying a tracking device could you buy a cheap mobile phone and hide it somewhere the vehicle and police would be able to track it by calling it if stolen. Is this possible.
Get yourself a NOKIA 3210 or any of the Nokia 3000 series phones
THese can be sent off to companies on EBAY or elsewhere ( look-up spy-phone)
Once converted they look or appear to be "BRICKED" in that they do not have an active screen or one that can be disabled.
These can then be fitted to your vehicle secreted away somewhere warm dry and safe.
Once fitted you can communicate to your car/ bike you can even by a text message disable it/immobilise it.
And then using mobile phone tracker software like KIDS GO or Where's my mobile" or phonetrace you can locate the phone ( and therefore your vehicle) on Google earth.
some companies will even install a GPS setup to work off of the GSM phone which will pole back GPS coordinates in a text message to you
THis too can be added with a tilt switch which will activate the phone and send you a text to your mobile..

I can sell you an a-z for a few quid.

You could use an immobiliser
The spy shops might have something.

On the modern cell phones yes. They have been used multiple times to locate an crime victim. On an older phone no. They weren't designed that way.

Where are you going to hide it? Watching your money on a situation like this is probably a bad idea. Spend the money .

Swift, almost everything is possible, but how much you got to spend. Buying a GPS enabled cell phone outside of contract might be pricey, even on ebay. I am willing to bet it would be cheaper to chip the bike anyway, much less obvious too. I didn't search too long at the site below, but it looks promising, but I didn't see a price, and we all know what that means $$$$$$$$!

GPS Tracker?
Mar 07, 2007 by mina_lumina | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I bought a car that had a gps tracker that could shut the car down if I didn't make payments. Could an improperly installed device cause electrical problems? I have to jump the car every time I want to start it because something is draining the battery. We've changed out the battery twice and replaced the alternator. All the fuses are fine. Thoughts?
In addition, the heating/cooling went out at the same time. Could these be related?
Checked the connections many many times. Not even a little bit of corrosion, and they're fully tightened. The batteries are fine when we get them, but when we've taken them back there will be problems with them, like a short or something.
Have You taken the pos batt. cable loose at Starter and also the small Ign terminal at the Starter and scrape them and rethigten
them. I just finished with a 99 yr, Vehicle they had some "Mech"
replace Batt and Alt about 200 dollars. When i went to check it out
No lights no starter, nothing. I was checking the Ign Wire (small one) and the Pos cable end both at the Starter,It moved a small bit.I tightened 3/4 round not much.It fixed the car.5 min Job,First thing buy a Batt. Hydrometer at auto Zone 5 Dollars, check each cell, you are looking to see if they are about the same.I believe from your statement a Loose connection,That is the first step.in Cold weather loose connections can cause alt and Batt and starter-You said something was draining Batt, that is what I was told,I checked Batt,Good so don"t jump start./Good Luck,I couldn"t charge for a 5 Min job. What do you think the dealer would have Charged?
