Historical Vignettes: Teen hang-outs in 1950s were Dairy Queen, mini-golf

— In the fabulous '50s, with the birth of rock 'n' roll, the popularity of drive-in movies, school sock hops, sleep-over parties and, of course, lover's lane and watching submarine races, the teenagers were cookin' hip, cool cats making plans on the horn, always cranked to split the pad and spend some bread to make the scene in some new threads, having a blast while trying to be good, but fearing the heat and not wanting to be termed juvenile delinquents. Egads, big daddy, take a breath and dig it!

Stuart's young adults were no different from those of other cities, but in such a small town, there were few public places to "hang out" and be with friends or enjoy some recreational entertainment. That situation improved somewhat in the 1950s. On land at the northeast intersection of U.S. 1 and Colorado Avenue, Don O'Kelly contracted with builder J.D. Gray and a permit was obtained for a $5,000 concrete block structure: Martin County's first Dairy Queen!

The official opening was Saturday, July 4, 1953. With milk for the products supplied by Moore's Dairy and all orders made within customer view, it offered shakes, sundaes, malted milks, ice cream in pint or quart containers and, naturally, cones with the curl on top. The Dairy Queen and an adjoining Snack Basket, featuring hamburgers and fries and other tasty quick-order foods, were very popular establishments during the 1950s and '60s and provided to some extent, a 'hang out' for the younger crowd, especially after a school function. Boys could show off their hot rods or fast cars with cropped tops, Holley carbs, Hurst shifters, "moon" hub caps, glass pack mufflers and fancy fender skirts while the females conversed in some girl talk, probably about the boys. Dreamy!

Will just a glass pack muffler make my truck loud or do I need something else?

I would like to make my truck louder but do I need just the muffler changed or an entire new exhaust system

a glass pack will help make your truck louder. the best way that i found to do it depending on how much you have to spend is to get 40series flow masters put on. you can change your exhaust if you are wanting to dual it out. if you do that i would stick with a 2.5-3 inch exhaust even if you dump it down they have dumps that are the same size.

you can get a large glass pack and it will make it louder than stock. It may let it breath a little better as well.

Why does it have to be louder?

just putting on the glasspack will do the trick.

Is it illegal to have a glass pack muffler in Arkansas? And will it sound good?

Its going on a 1991 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6.

i think it is

I do not know the legality but as far as sound goes it depends on the installation. First, do not get a V8 glass pack. Second, the distance from the exhaust manifold will change the sound. Closer to the manifold (within 2 feet) will be a bit louder and crack out each cylinder whereas four feet from the end of the tailpipe will be more of a moan. Run under-size pipe (25% smaller dia.) from the front mounted glass pack and it will crack even more, espesially on a down shift holding the truck back with the back pressure. Either way, consider your neighbors.

I don't know about the legality, but, a glasspack behind a V-6 will sound like 6 rocks in a coffee can! Thats why I haven't done anything to the exhaust on my '90 V-6 Ranger 4x4.

If I put a "Flow Tech" glass pack muffler on my 2005 Impala. Would it sound good?

I have the 3.4L V6 Base model. And by putting this on there would it increase my hp?
and if not, what would you recommend?

A lot of these guys are really stupid. Glass packed Mufflers are the best. Instead of restricting the sound like other mufflers do Glass pack does not and the fiberglass in the muffler absorbs the sound and flow is not stricted. It will be much louder but it will be a smooth low base sound. This is the sound of power. All hot rod builders know that when making power quiet is not an option but it has to be a low base sound with a smooth idle. These mufflers are expencive but they are the best. These style of mufflers create less back pressure and if anyone knew what they were talking about they would know the less back pressure the more power is created. Oviously the other idiots that have answered your questions knows nothing about building cars and is only a posser on the internet. If Glass pack is to expensive for you then get Chamber Mufflers they are the second best style of mufflers.

GTA Tony- Oh Im quite sure I was the only one that answered the question. Question one, I said It will have a low base sound with a smooth idle. I don't know if he will like the sound after he puts them on. I don't know what cranks his chain. Question two, I then said it will make more power because of less back pressure. I doesn't matter what the fuck the engine is. It could be a 1000cc Trabant as long as there is less back pressure there will be more power. Your so far behind me on this you think your ahead and don't give me anymore bullshit. You already wasted to much of my time.

It would be loud and obnoxious and would add no power. Seriously.

No and nothing, you have a sedan with a 3.4L, leave it alone lol

Not much, if anything will make a 3.4L sound good. MAYBE Magnaflow? That's a big maybe.

G6er, it's not the same motor, the V6 G6's are 3.5L motors, totally different motor than the 2.8/3.1/3.4 liter family

Canadian Muscle-He's talking about putting mufflers on a 3.4L V6...it doesn't matter if it's a glasspack or not...it's a freakin V6. It doesn't matter what "hot rodders" use on their builds because AGAIN...this is a 3.4L family sedan. He's not going to see any big gains regardless of what style it is. Not to mention glasspacks sound like complete ASS...and will sound like bigger ass on a V6. I think you're the poser, reading comprehension is good. I can guarantee that I've had a hand in building a lot faster cars than you have....learn to read the question before answering. Idiot.

Youtube 2005 impala exhaust. (you will get lots of guys with the old impalas with the big engines but you will find some people who have done exhausts for the new V6's.) they usually use flowmasters, or magnaflows. If you want you can also look up G6 exhausts because it's the same engine.
If your just doing the muffler, no HP gains, you just have to do it because you want the sound.

what is the difference between a resonator and a glass pack muffler?

A resonator is designed simply to change the tone of the exhaust note. A glass pack will also have that effect to some extent, but it is designed primarily to afford some dampening of the level of sound emitted, however limited owing to its straight-through design. Mostly glass packs are used to satisfy the legal requirement of having a muffler without creating any back pressure that would come from a regular muffler with a baffled design.

glass-pack muffler for my truck?

If i got a glass-pack muffler for my truck would i need a exhaust tip too?

I don't think you will.
