Audi A8 to See Increased Production and a Hybrid Model
NASHUA, N.H. (08/30/2011)(readMedia)-- For years, Audi has used clean diesel technology to improve its fuel economy without stunting performance, but now hybrid technology is making its way into the lineup to do the same. Though currently only confirmed for European markets, production will begin on Audi A8 models with hybrid drivetrains in 2012, marking the first time the flagship luxury sedan has been available with battery-assisted propulsion.
The A8 is Audi's largest luxury car and serves as a halo vehicle for the entire brand, which makes the addition of a hybrid drivetrain a likely indication of the automaker's future plans. Strong sales of the 2011 A8 at Audi dealerships already have Audi planning a 57 percent increase in production of the vehicle at its Neckarsulm, Germany plant, which also produces the Audi R8 sports car and the Audi A7 four-door coupe.
"Despite the instability in the stock market, we're confident in Audi's forecasts that show increasing desire for high-quality luxury vehicles," said Larry Bedell, general manager of New Hampshire Audi dealership Audi of Nashua. "Demand for Audis has already been high this year, and we'd expect the addition of an A8 hybrid to push U.S. sales even higher."
