2011 Toyota Highlander review from Consumer Reports
Comfortable and refined, the Toyota Highlander ranks among the best three-row SUVs. The hybrid version gets amazing fuel economy but is expensive ...

Best fuel efficient/inexpensive mini SUV?
Aug 25, 2011 by Corn | Posted in Buying & Selling
Hello :). I am looking for a fuel efficient mini SUV. I am currently a college student, so am looking for one that is inexpensive (possibly no more than $13-14k) It does not have to be a new make but preferably not anything older than 2004 or 2005, just something that will be reliable as I am a long-drive commuter to school and work.
I have been wanting a Jeep Wrangler but have heard it does not do well with gas?
Advice? thank you!
You are correct that Wranglers do have poor fuel economy (15mpg city/18mpg highway). Although many people like them purely because of their cute styling, and optional convertible soft top, they are best suited for someone whose driving is primarily off-road.
Class-leading compact-SUVs (or mini-SUVs) in that price/age range include the following:
2008 Ford Escape [used TMV (true-market value) from $13,145]
"Thanks to perfect reliability ratings, excellent fuel economy (22 mpg city/28 mpg highway), well designed and comfortable cabin, and good safety ratings (highest possible in nearly every area), the 2008 Ford Escape is a solid choice for those shopping for an inexpensive, compact SUV." --Edmunds.com
2006 Toyota RAV4 (used TMV from $12,780)
"With nimble handling on the street, a roomy cabin, great reliability ratings (highest possible), good safety ratings (highest possible in nearly every area), and good V6 fuel economy (20 mpg city/27 mpg highway) the Toyota RAV4 is a top compact SUV choice for 2006."
--Edmunds.com
2007 Honda CR-V (used TMV from $13,980)
"the 2007 Honda CR-V is the most refined and practical small SUV Honda has ever built. If you're shopping in this class, it should be high on your list. Notable about this SUV are a comfortable, quiet ride, good quality cabin, agile handling, perfect reliability scores, superb safety scores (highest possible in every area), and a reasonably efficient (20mpg city/27mpg), yet slightly under-powered V-4." --Edmunds.com
Good luck!
EDIT: In referrence to another answerer's suggestion, the Subaru Outback is a car (offered as both a sedan, and a wagon), not an SUV. Also, Outbacks are best suited for large families as they offer 3rd row seating in wagon models. That space comes with a price--literally, and with fuel economy. The Outback manages upper teens in town, and low 20's on the highway.

I would look for a 2006+ Subaru Outback, they are great.

what is the best SUV that is most fuel efficient?

I have a toyota 4runner and it's been too expensive on gas. Thinking of trade in for a more fuel efficient car.
Oddly enough there was a jury finding on that and released tonight. If you click on the below link you can read the article, but, believe it or not, the top ranking "green" vehicle in all that they judged was the new hybrid Chevy Tahoe SUV.

the ford escape hybrid is by far the most fuel efficient in its class. with around 30 mpg and $40 fill up cost, the harmfull emmissions are very low

Well Jeep has two new SUV's, the Patriot and Compass. I have a patriot and another family member has a compass. They are both sized like rav4 but are very roomy on the inside and get 26city and 30-32hwy, and I dont drive like a grandmaw. They both start out around 15000-16000 and come with LIFETIME warranty, they will replace an engine, transmission, and any other powertrain part as long as you keep up with the maintance like oil changes. I would highly reccomend them

all 4x4s are juicy, and only if you are going to use them for their practical need are they justified, they are purely for off road and if youaren't off road then they are anti-socail and selfish,my company is a transport industry and we run buses, they are all hybrid bio-diesel,but my boss, the MD, drives half a mile everyday to work in a v8 Range rover, what a tosser.

what is the best fuel efficient mid size suv?

Probably the Honda Pilot...the Toyota Highlander and 4-Runner probably aren't that far behind. The Mazda CX-9 is not too bad either.

What is the best kind of suv/crossover for fuel efficiency and safety?
May 24, 2007 by J | Posted in Buying & Selling
My husband is starting a new job and he's going to be travelling a lot more, so we're looking for a fuel efficient suv/or crossover (he doesn't like cars or minivans). I'm not sure what's safe AND fuel efficient. He's currently looking at the Edge, a Grand Cherokee or some kind of Buick crossover (I don't know the name). Any insight would be helpful! (Or personal experience!) Thanks!
Oh, and I forgot.. I want something like Ford, Chrysler or GM made..... Nothing foreign!
I would go with a Toyota Rav 4 or a Honda CRV (4 cylinder models) because they are reliable and i beleive that they have fairly good crash ratings. they are also not too bad on gas when you compare them to a vehicle such as you are describing (Edge, Grand Cherokee, Buick).
Start your engines: What's hot, what's not among 2012 modelsCR-V: The fourth generation of the small crossover SUV vehicle gets a redesign with a sleeker exterior and improvements that make it more fuel efficient. Details haven't been released, but the new CR-V goes on sale in late 2011.
