Bi-Lo creates 'fuel frenzy'
Helen Jared, of Chattanooga, was one of the first of 100 people who took up Bi-Lo’s offer Wednesday for up to 20 gallons of free gas.
She said her subcompact Smart Car probably would take only about three gallons, but free gas is free gas.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” Jared said, adding that she called her daughter, who was in line in the car behind her.
Seizing on the elevated price of gasoline — a gallon of regular unleaded is on average almost $1 more than a year ago in the Chattanooga area — Bi-Lo plans to offer its Fuel Frenzy promotion again today.
As it did Wednesday, Bi-Lo will partner with area radio stations and reveal clues every hour and a half about the location of a mystery gas station. The last clue will air at 1 p.m. and the first 100 customers to find the station will receive a Bi-Lo voucher for up to 20 gallons of free gas.
With regular unleaded selling for $3.41 at the Tigermarket at Hixson Pike and Lupton Drive, a 20-gallon fill-up equaled $68.20. If every car pumped all 20 gallons, that set Bi-Lo back about $6,820.

A smart coupon shopper needs to remember that coupon policies can and will change. It’s always smart to make sure that you understand the current version of your store’s policy before shopping, so you can prepare yourself in case of a change.
These are the current coupon polices for some of our local stores.
Bi-Lo
Bi-Lo doubles coupons to 60 cents with the loyalty card every day. That means a 50-cent coupon becomes worth $1. A 65-cent coupon is redeemed at its actual value. There are certain coupons that are excluded from doubling. These coupons will have the words “Do Not Double” written across the top of the coupon.
Digital coupons and offers are deducted from a customer purchase before paper coupons or any other discounts and cannot be added back or removed once the card has been scanned. Store coupons and electronic coupons will not double.
You will not be allowed overage on items, meaning that if doubling a coupon exceeds the price of the item, you will not be allowed to “make” money, but you will receive the item free. Coupons will be doubled only on the first 10 of any individual item, with the exception of P&G products, which have limits of four doubled coupons per like item. Bi-Lo will issue rain checks for up to four items if the sale items are sold out.
