The most basic legally required car insurance is called ‘3rd party’ insurance, and it protects you if you cause accident with someone else. In this case the other person (the 3rd party) receives the benefits of your insurance which will compensate them. Many also offer third party fire and theft insurance which acts as above, but also covers your car if it is stolen or burnt. More comprehensive insurance is also available, and can be used to insure your car, even if you’re deemed responsible for causing the accident, although these packages are more expensive than the 3rd party offers.
On top of this, many insurers offer optional extras which can enhance your coverage if desired. You may choose to insure a ‘named driver’ who is then also covered to drive your car for a fixed period at an additional cost. Drivers can even buy replacement vehicle cover on top of their insurance which provides them with a car to use when their vehicle is being repaired or replaced.
Motorists in the North West Warned to Prepare for Winter to Avoid Travel Chaos
22.05.12
LONDON, January 24, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Leading cheap car insurance provider Kwik-Fit Insurance (KFI) have issued a warning to the North West's motorists to be fully prepared for this winter's anticipated big freeze.
The warning comes as the business recently released figures revealing a spike of 22% in breakdown calls during the arctic conditions, which blanketed the UK last year.
The intermediary was inundated with calls to its emergency breakdown service, receiving a record number of enquiries from motorists who had been involved in accidents due to the icy conditions or had simply been unable to start their cars. According the Association of British Insurers (ABI), in the month of December there were 278,000 claims from insured motorists for vehicle damage costing £530 million, the majority of which were caused by cars travelling at low speeds in icy conditions.
The North West was experiencing the full force of the weather this time last year with light snow falling in Manchester before pushing further North and East with snow causing disruption to traffic.

Aug 24, 2007 by Sabreen | Posted in Insurance & Registration
I have always been insured with either Churchill or Direct Line.
Been shopping around this time and Swinton have offered the best quote so far through Highway Insurance.,.
Price includes Legal cover, High breakdown cover, courtesy Car ect,,
Im just abit unsure what the service is like as I dont know anyone who uses them.
Any one used them and what were your experiences? good or bad ?
Many thanks in advance.
They're a sizeable well known company. Shouldn't imagine you'll have any problems.

Swinton are the largest high-street insurance broker in the Country (owned in part by MMA insurance). Like all intermediaries they are regulated by the FSA.
Reputation wise - as good as any large organisation - you won't get a personal service if you buy online, but going through a local office might be better - so you can call in and speak to the staff if needed.
Just read their status disclosure document so you won't be shocked with their administration/ cancellation fees should you need to alter the policy.

hi i have been with swinton for over ten years and never had a problem with them as stated by another you can go and talk face to face if you need to.

Hi,
Swinton. I was insured with them many moons ago, and all seemed well until a twit drove into me.
All hell broke loose, as Swinton pathetically tried to negotiate a settlement.
They were hopeless, so all very well until a claim arrives on their doorstep, then silence.
Do not trust the bu**ers is my advice
What is insurance for, then. I asked, surely so that we have a claim sorted out after paying our premium.
This was largely forgotten about.
Avoid Swinton
Hopeless

I used then a couple of years ago, very accommodating and very reasonable. However their rates shot up when renewal was due and they were not prepared to talk sense. They did not get my renewal.
My searches following led me to the Post Office (online). Great deal, good price and 50 quid cash-back. I have renewed with them again as their figure was quite reasonable.

car insurance quotes?
Aug 30, 2009 by jim p | Posted in Insurance & Registration
I have just spent an endless amount of time on various car insurance sites, which start of with reasonable quotes then you add the bits and pieces on and you end up with ridiculous final costs.
I am not insuring a 0-60 in 5 seconds type car but a small 1.4 Honda
I am fully aware that any car can cause damage,my wife drives the car,has had no claims or convictions.
I have a larger car and the insurance is £50 cheaper than all quotes received so far, which includes breakdown recovery, protected no claims and legal cover.
anyone with car insurance advice would be appreciated, these car insurance sites are a pain
Two real choices, you can look up various insurance companies and either call or go to their on line presence and compare rates.
Or you can find an independent agent that isn't tied to any one company, give him your information and let his search his data base for the best deal for you and your situation.

Call an agent with a local office and a person who you can actually speak with
entidtil | Aug 30, 2009
More than were best for me. Only £400 for a BMW X5. It of course depends on the driver history. if you dont want to go through all the website typing. Go to your local broker.

i would recommend using site like:
compare.com
my supermarket
for cheaper insurance
sh | Aug 31, 2009
like oklatom, I (as an agent) strongly suggest you find a local agent that has a good reputation, and talk to them about the factors. Yes, it can get ridiculous with all the add-ons & ET CETERA. (most unneeded).

Ring them up do not rely on the websites.

Car Insurance Question Advice please?
May 27, 2010 by latenight | Posted in Insurance & Registration
I have been insured with a high street car insurer for a few years now and my current policy with them was fully comprehensive , a few weeks ago my car engine gave out and I had to scrap it , I contacted my Insurer to end my Policy ( no on going claims what so ever ).
I was told over the phone that I would have to pay £114 to end the policy which includes £80 for the remainder of the breakdown cover and £34 early surrender fee, I cannot understand this to be honest. Basically I havent got a car and they are saying I still have to pay.
Why is this im paying my insurance for fresh air! doesnt seem right to me advice if you could
All insurance companies will charge you, if you cancel your policy early. They are allowed by law to make that charge.
Twisted_Ace | May 27, 2010
They all charge to cancel or amend a policy. Your insurance company had purchased the breakdown cover from a third party, probably not at full price but they will be unable to reclaim that and it takes admin time to deal with the cancellation of the policy etc etc.
If you get a car in the very near future will your no claims still be valid? Might have paid you to tick it over whilst you sorted yourself out.
Monstermunch | May 27, 2010
The £34 is an admin fee and most companies charge for a mid-term cancellation.
The breakdown cover seems to be an annual contract that you were allowed to pay for on a monthly basis, so the remainder of the years premium is still due. Look at the terms and conditions of the breakdown cover.
