Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Winning His Second Daytona 500, Drafting Styles & More

“I don’t really think about it.  I want to go up and win the race. I just don’t spend a lot of time thinking about riding in the back. I don’t waste a minute of the day doing that (laughter).  I know what you are trying to ask me, but I don’t know.  I don’t have an opinion about it.  I think you could do it, if that is something you wanted to do; I think it would work.  However I don’t plan on doing it.  I never really plan on doing it.  It may sound like we make that decision prior to the race; but you make it during the race when something happens, or you see something happen that you don’t like.  You’re like ‘man, these guys are probably going to wreck; I don’t want to be right up behind it. I can’t get around them because the track is four or three wide or whatever.’ So you move back a couple of hundred yards.  I think it is poor judgment to think about it during the week, because you are not thinking about what you need to do to win the race.  You are thinking about going backwards.  That is not something I want to concentrate on.”

NHRA: Hight (Funny Car), Brown (Top Fuel) & Line (Pro Stock) Win at Arizona

Thanks to Brown, Schumacher, a six-time national champion, will have to wait a bit longer for a chance to add to the total.

“Obviously, we were hoping to finally get to victory lane after such a long time,” Schumacher said. “Unfortunately, he (Brown) just got me again.”

“It’s not like I have his (Schumacher’s) number,” Brown said. “It’s not like we’re slaughtering him. We’re winning by thousandths of a second. It can go either way.

“I’ve got 16 Top Fuel wins and he has 67. That’s an incredible team and I’m just trying to catch up.”

Brown was smiling afterward, but admitted the win still was somewhat bittersweet. Tucson Citizen

Funny Car drag racer Robert Hight wasn’t sure Sunday whether winning the National Hot Rod Association’s Arizona Nationals and beating John Force Racing colleague Mike Neff in the final round was the best part of his day at Firebird International Raceway.

2008 RAV 4 Base - Purchase?

I am attempting to do some negotiation with various dealerships for purchasing a new 2008 RAV 4 Base FWD for my fiance' (Budget is tight, so we're trying to save a little by not choosing the 4WD). I just wanted to get some input from other experienced car shoppers out there.

The best deal I found so far was through ganley toyota with the following breakdown:

Base Price: $21,100
DR Roof Rack - $220.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set - $199.00
CD Tonneau Cover - $140.00
AA 17" Styled Steel Wheel - $120.00
Destination Charge - $685.00

Total MSRP: $22,464

The dealer quoted the following:

Selling Price: $20,699.00
Doc Fee: $250.00
Sales Tax (6.25%): $1309.31
Title Fee: $25.50

Total Price: 22,283.81

Is it really a decent deal? More room to negotiate?

We are also comparing the Kia Sportage pricing, but her heart is really set on the RAV 4.

Thoughts / Suggestions are appreciated.

First of all, great choice. The Rav4 is the best in its class, and is the winner of credible comparison tests. It has the highest level of recommendation by Consumer Reports, and it also has the highest rating. It has good build quality, safety, and reliability. I wouldn't ever get a Kia. Even though Kias may cost a bit less up front, they lose their value so fast, when it comes to selling the car, you'll loose huge amounts of money, while Toyotas retain their value very well.

There's always room to negotiate at a dealership. Bargaining there is a win-win situation, as the car salesman's goal is to make sure you buy the car. Shop around at other dealerships, and use what you find as leverage in bargaining. Also, I heard that dealing on the phone is easier because the salesperson is worried you'll just hang up.

Don't just go with the price the salesman gives you right up front; negotiate as much as you can. Don't be afraid to argue a bit, because it could save you alot of money!

Thanks for asking. I hope I was helpful!

Most of the time, there will be room to play with from the Floor price and the final price. Try knocking him down a few grand. Always go lower first, then go up from there. If you stay high, the dealer could agree, and you end up paying more than you wanted to pay.
