U-M wins fed contract to study vehicle safety technology Research will eye wireless connection to prevent crashes David Shepardson/ Detroit News Washington Bureau
Washington — The University of Michigan has won a $14.9 million federal contract to study the potential of "connected" vehicles on the streets and highways of Ann Arbor — the technology that could revolutionize auto safety and prevent thousands of deaths.
The advanced technology will be tested in a major year-long study, beginning next August and continuing for one year. The results could help significantly reduce the number of vehicle crashes on the nation's roads, the U.S. Transportation Department said.
The study will be done by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
The project will include the installation of wireless devices in up to 3,000 vehicles.
They will evaluate the effectiveness of connected vehicle technology to prevent crashes in an everyday environment.

Why not a device, installed to alert Driver/watchkeepers mental-alertness,to minimise road/sea accidents?

Why not a device, installed to alert Driver/watch keepers on duty, of their mental-alertness,to minimise road/sea accidents? which costs innocent lives. Prevention is better than cure.
Two problems. One is getting people to PAY for said device, yeah maybe if you start in things like Companies that can afford if and look good it will catch on, but it's still going to be a large cost. The OTHER problem, also a large one, is getting people to USE it.
As to the device, do you know of any made? I mean are they currently out there? If not then it still has to be designed and you have to admit that will be a start of a problem. Are we going to go by how awake someone is? What are we going by for mental-alertness? Some are awake and STILL distracted, how do you account for that in a device? Perhaps if we started with an OUTRIGHT BAN ON CELL-PHONES it would help.

Ref to question and answer:
I agree, purchase, installation and ue would be key, but the devices are out there, if only is a testing phase.
They consist of a digital camera that tracks the eye movement and head tilt, signalling an alarm when the head tilts beyond a certain angle, and when the iris of the driver's eye is not able to be tracked (ie closed) They do have imposed devices for those convicted of DWI (the breath analyzer in the steering column - $2000 or so), so perhaps if anyone is convicted of drowsing at the wheel, these will become court-imposed modifications.

Should we have a means to alert the driver without the emergency button?
Sep 28, 2006 by bwadsp | Posted in Safety
Sometimes one can hear a strange noise on the train which needs the driver's attention but does not form an emergeny. The other situation I had was a begger carrying a small child using the doors between cars while the tube was in motion in the tunnel. If the child had fallen it would have been killed. The begger should have been removed from the train by police at the next station. What do you do in that sort of situation?
call police to be at the next stop

your driving behind an armored truck and a bag of money falls out do you alert the driver or do you make a lft?
Sep 10, 2008 by droopy | Posted in Safety
this is for 10 points your best and honest answer, and do you go left going on a one way street.
Honestly, I'll pick up the bag and alert the armored truck driver, the reward may not be monetary but, the feeling of doing something good is to me.

alert the driver, maybe he would be kind enough to give you a reward for being honest. but if i could do it without getting caught and going to jail then i would.

Finders keepers. You go the way the traffic goes and the arrows point. Might be left or right.

The bag falls out right in the middle of my car while I'm driving at high speed, so I crash into, which spins me out of control and I'm involved in an accident. I may be hurt, my car needs repairs.
I sue.
That way, the money honestly goes back to the truck. But the armored company has to pay for my damages for careless packaging!
So money is honestly returned and money is honestly in my favor. =)
WOO!!!

It largely depends on the person I think, there has been many cases when people have mistakenly left very large amounts of money in taxi cabs and the driver turns it over to the police you know I think the vast majority of people are basically honest I for one would pick up the money and immediately alert the driver of the truck as to what had happen and there are those who would just flat out steal it again it depends on the person.

I guess the right thing to do would be to tell the driver. but right now money is so tight its causeing me to almost lose my house and my marrige. im afraid I would do what ever i could to get the cash
Troy L | Sep 10, 2008
tell the driver
gapsusie | Sep 10, 2008
Alert the driver. Also call 911 if you are not able to alert the driver, it is illegal to keep the money.
queen | Sep 10, 2008
First off you will not be able to alert the drive and if you are lucky enough to they will not stop so it would be better just to call 911 and tell them of the situation and you just might get a reward for doing the right thing.......

Suspicious bag on train on seat next to you! would you alert the driver or ignore it?
Sep 30, 2007 by EnigmaticJ`s Lawyer | Posted in Safety
A person jumped off the train and left the bag. You can hear tick tick tick........... This does happen as you know. or would you leave it to someone else to notice?
Princessandrea: NO!! Do NOT touch the packet. Leave that to the trained staff. It may have motion detectors or other triggers inside.
Activate the Emergency handle/button as soon as possible to alert the train operator. Ask other people in the carriage to move away from the suspicious packet. It is better to have a false alarm than to do nothing.

What makes a good driver? Skillwise, not obeying the law and being alert and all...?

For example, in the movie Transformers, Mikaela says that (referring to Bumblebee, the Camaro) "This car's a pretty good driver"....Is it cause how smooth the car's going?
Well, for one thing, it's being able to totally "become" the car. That probably sounds too new-age zen, but if you think of the car as an extension of yourself, like it's your own body you are hurtling down that street, you can be more aware of where it is in space, the sounds of it, where you are in relation to other objects, etc. and just like you pretty much aren't banging into things when you are just walking down the street, if you "ARE" the car, you won't have a wreck......do you see grasshopper? LOL
