Cat 3126 being tested cold

3126 caterpillar wont start without eatherand wont stay running after eather is sprayed?

working on a3126 caterpillar deisal engine. its in a sterling dump truck. first it was running and starting own t own but there was alot of blowby. removed the head howned number 1 and 4 cylinder walls. put in new rings and rod bearings.. now it wont start without eather sprayed in it and it wont stay running withowt eather.. please help

ok. back up. blown cylinder walls? what does that mean? Are the liners pitted through, introducing coolant into the combustion chamber? Sounds like you need to back up and punt. There was a buttload of blowby, ok, its ready for an inframe. Then you just replaced the rings and con rod bearings after you honed out #1 and #4 cylinders? Well, my friend, thats pretty disgraceful. As a diesel/truck technician, I can understand that the truck needs to run everyday--it sits, it doesnt make money. But, if you unzip an engine, you need to do the job correctly, because you just found out why. Half***ing a rebuild , ESPECIALLY on a CAT, is a no no. If it wont pickup fuel after you ethered it, its not gonna. Tear it down, start all over. If you are in Va, I can help. If not...sorry. BTW, ether is known to burn valves and torch off injector nozzle tips. If you want to hot start a diesel, spray gasoline into the intake out of a spray bottle. It works a lot better and it safer for the engine. I dont mean to be the bearer of bad news or the Yahoo Answers ballbreaker, but maybe you dont have enough experience with engines to tackle this? I know these engines, if you need help, email me dieselskidz28@yahoo.com

Got to agree with Skid, if you are going to invest the labor tearing an engine apart, you might as well repair it all.

I don't know if you are working for a shop, or if you are an independent trucker trying to fix his own stuff.

Assuming that the block is okay and you are getting good compression, you aren't getting any fuel. You need to start trouble shooting from there.

Are you getting a lot of white smoke when trying to start? If you are then you're getting fuel, but it won't ignite. Chances are, you have to tear the engine apart again.

No smoke at all? No fuel, and you need to find out why. check all your connections filters etc. for leaks. Leaks on the suction side of the system are hard to find since they don't leak fuel out, only air in.

Take it one system at a time and figure out what went wrong. Good luck.

This Question is only for Caterpillar Techs only: Please Help if you can?

I'm Working on 3126 Cat Engine. I found a Ton of Oil in the Coolant Resivior. So I Have now Checked all of these things. The head was sent for pressure testing and magna fluxed. Tested the Oil Cooler, and Radiator. Also have Tested the Air Compreser Head. Is the Block the only thing I have Left to Check? or does This Engine have Liners? Could I have Mitaken the Oil for Bars Leak. Is Lots of Bars leaks Oily? The Driver told me that he got it hot once and it cooled down so he keep going. Is there something that i missed? Please any thoughts would Help?

Hey T-Man I am back...as a different user though, cuz I wanted to change a couple of things in my profile....I Know what caterpillar engines are!
(on highway engines/Marine/Industrial/OEM/Oil&Gas
/power generation*) They make A LOT of noise! they look funny too! Anyways, since you are working on your 3126 CAT engine....here is what I think is the answers to your problems...but first let me ask you this: *have you checked all of the following?:
*Aftercooler Temperature *Compression Ratio *NA engine Ratings(Natural Aspirated) *TA engine Rating(TurbochargedAftercooled)
(YOU DO KNOW THE TEMPERATURES...etc. right?)
*Continuous (power&speed...)*LE(low emission engire configuration..)*Ratings(LHV-Low Heat Value...)*Ratings(SAE J1995..)
ANYHOW, with this in mind...judging that you probably done so by now, Let me give you MY OPINION....
*YOUR MARINE ENGINE...since it is a 3126 CAT...One of the main drawbacks to the Cat 3126 is that it is not a rebuilable engine. It is a dry sleeve engine meaning that the pistons go up and down on the cylinder walls similar to a car engine. The larger Cat engines and the medium Cummins C 8.3 liter have a liner between the pistons and the block. When a problem occurrs or for a general overhaul the ASCE (lol) mechanic will just disconnet the pistons from the crankshaft and remove the pistons and liners and then install new ones. This can be done without removing the engine from the truck. Usually a new cylinder head and valves are also put in.
The Cat engine also seems to be very picky about low and dirty oil.It is probably a fine engine for a local delivery truck that goes 40-50,000 miles a year. But in expediting you can easily rack up 125,000 or more miles in a year.
BUT SINCE you are barely working on it and all..I KNOW more..And I'll be happy to tell you more...I don't know it this DID answered your questions and all...you probably already knew...but I don't wanna write TOO much... wanna ask me ONE specific question..? after all you are looking for IDEAS, right buddy!?

OUCH! I know the answer...but what can I say?...you only think CATERPILLAR TECHS know best!...so I am moving on, cuz I ain't CTs okay?!! buh bye, champ!

Well If you had the head checked it was probally the head gasket then. If no then it is probally the block. Hard to trouble shoot without being there. Good Luck
