Cummins N14?
Jul 19, 2007 by Confused | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm about to buy a newer dump truck. Its a 1996 Pete 378 with a Cummins N14 motor in it. I currently have an old CAT3406....how good are the Cummins N14s? Will this motor do good...any known problems?
I use to work on 4 wheel drive tractors and some of them used the n14 cummins. We never had any trouble with them. Cummins is a very very reliable engine.

Need input on fuel mileage between series 60 and cummins n14?
May 27, 2007 by Patrick L | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
I can choose between a 2002 freightliner century with a n14 460 or dd60 430/470. Is there going to be a huge difference on mpg? For me less than 5% difference is acceptable.
I currently drive a 98 volvo 610 with volvo d12 385hp. My mileage now is comparable with centurys dd60 430/470 the other guys are driving.
Your question makes it appear that the Detroit is a variable horsepower model., and that the Cummings is a strait 460. If that is the case, although I'm not a Detroit person, I would say you may get slightly better mileage from the DD60. It is really a 470 horse power engine, but basically the computer cuts the fuel back to a 430 rating. When the computer senses a load on the engine it increases the fuel to give you the extra power.
The company I drove for before retiring had some Cummings 310/390's and some 450's. The variables got over 7 MPG while a few of the 450's got less than 5 MPG.

n14 gets better fuel mileage, s-60 has more power.

What is the difference between a M11 and N14 Cummins engine?
Apr 20, 2009 by singlefarmer | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
There are several differences between the engines, but the most significant is the displacement. The N14 is a 14 liter engine, while the M11 is an 11 liter engine. Because of the larger size, the N14 has more horsepower and torque. Some M11 engines can be uprated to the point of the lower horsepower N14's, but as a rule of thumb the N14 is just a more powerful engine.
Although both engines have 6 cylinders, the M11 has one cylinder head while the N14 has 3 cylinder heads.
Both engines use the Celect fuel system, which is a gear pump that then pressurizes the fuel through the heads and around each injector. The electronics are also very similar for both engines.
Once again, there are many more differences, but hopefully this is a start!

how do you bleed air out of cooling system on a cummins n14 500hp engine,?

air in system, temp rises and then falls. heater works then stops, then works again, air pocket,
you should have a weep screw on the upper radiator hose where it crosses over the top of the valve covers. it should be arouynd a 5/16 screw other wise just run it till it flushes through these trucks will generally hold 10 to 12 gallons of water depending on how big your sleeper is or if the truck has a sleeper, sometimes alittle less
