BMW, which has long claimed that diesel was the answer to the world’s environmental problems, has finally bowed to the inevitable and is starting to electrify. It debuted an all-new sixth-generation 3-Series, and added an ActiveHybrid 3 to complement the ActiveHybrid 5, both of which are on display at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
From BMW’s perspective, hybrids are an opportunity to give buyers a diesel level of fuel economy without sacrificing performance. The ActiveHybrid 3, for instance, offers the acceleration of the 335i with the mpg of the 328i.
This marks a welcome departure from BMW’s questionable strategy with the X6 hybrid SUV (at right). That car, powered by a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-8, was all about “ultimate driving machine” performance, without much fuel-economy boost. They said it was a “BMW first, and a hybrid second.” And it didn’t work — less than 1,000 of those vehicles have reportedly been sold, and it’s out of the produce lineup for 2012.
Mercedes-Benz to launch E-Class Hybrid at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show
22.05.12
Mercedes-Benz is all prepared to showcase its two hybrid E-Class sedans, the E 400 Hybrid and the E 300 Bluetec Hybrid at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show 2012. The E 300 Bluetec Hybrid is the car maker’s first diesel-electric vehicle that has already been displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.
Thomas Weber, a Daimler board member and head of Mercedes-Benz car development said, “With these two E-Class models we are now continuing our comprehensive hybrid offensive.” He further added that, “The modular technology opens up a quick way for us to complement other model series with hybrid models.”
The E 400 is powered by a single electric motor between a 302 hp, 3.5-litre V-6 engine and a tailored version of the seven-speed automatic transmission. The E 300 Bluetec Hybrid is equipped with a 201 hp, 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine which is capable of producing torque of 500 Nm.
This engine (training aid) was rebuilt at NADC (Nashville Auto Diesel College) during the diesel engine course. Detroit Diesel is prefered by most ...
propane injection system for my detroit diesel series 60 engine?
Jun 01, 2008 by neoga illinois | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
how do they work and where can i get one. i was told that they inject a little bit of propane in with the fuel/air to make it all burn giving as much as 8 or 9 miles per gallon instead of 6 or 7 that i normally get. how much are they?
Contact your nearest Detoit Diesel dealer and ask. They will not be one size fits all, plug and play. And it will be high dollar as is Propane.

why do i have oil in radiator of detroit diesel 60 series engine?
Jan 16, 2008 by Ellis P | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I agree with Dan and Bert, I say the oil cooler. I have replaced quite a few. Detroits are not bad engine, have worked on just as many Cats, and Cummins as I have Detroits. I am about 98% sure you have a bad oil cooler.

Blown Head gasket
blaing06 | Jan 16, 2008
possibly a cracked coolant passage near a oil feed port. but probably a failed head gasket. mabye a bad seal.
how is detroit bad? cat is having so many problems with their acert they acert buying guys trucks off of them. engines are removing the land from the pistons and having melt downs. that and its rumored that cat is losing so much on the acerts+all the emmisions stuff they have to develope that they may get out if the over the road engine bissiness. detroit currently detroit has the best mpg and lowest cost of ownership.

oil cooler, head gasket, or bad head
Dan | Jan 16, 2008
More than likely you have a bad head gasket. The oil gallery holes on the gasket, are probably worn and oil is getting mixed in with your coolant.
Billy | Jan 16, 2008
If there is no coolant in the oil, your oil cooler is probably leaking.
If the coolant has black fuel in it it is most likely a head gasket.
If there is coolant in the oil, the cylinder liner o-rings are leaking.

i am losing coolant in detroit diesel 60 series?
Aug 15, 2008 by ken | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
there is no sign of leakage and stem is blowing out from blower pipe.
I would check the thermastat housing and all the drain plugs. There is 5 plugs to drain the coolant from. Unless it is being rerouted somewhere else i dont know what to tell you i would need more details. Sorry. Good Luck
Blake D | Aug 15, 2008
you may have a blown head gasket on that one,if its still running good id say you have blown a head gasket on it,or cracked a head, and those are expensive to work on also, good luck.
dodge man | Aug 15, 2008
If there is no external sign of leakage it is likely an internal usage leak.. which means the coolant is being burned in the combustion chamber.. which would be evident by steam, or excess white smoke out the tailpipe/ stack. The likely culprit here is either a blown head gasket, or a cracked cylinder head, which the 60 series Detroits were known for.
