Former Blues GM Ron Caron dies at 82

Nicknamed "The Professor," Caron was a longtime assistant GM for the Canadiens and helped build the Montreal teams that won Stanley Cups in 1971 and 1973 and four consecutive titles from 1976-79.

Caron was hired as GM in St. Louis in 1983 and spent more than a decade in the position. He died Monday night in Montreal, the Blues confirmed Tuesday.

"Mr. Caron was extremely passionate about the Blues and the city of St. Louis," president of hockey operations John Davidson said in a statement. "He will truly be missed."

The Canadiens extended their sympathy to his family in a Twitter post.

"He was just so intense when it came to hockey," longtime Montreal broadcaster Dick Irvin said Tuesday. "If you listened to him, you learned a lot."

Former Blues forward Bernie Federko is now a team broadcaster. St. Louis plays in Montreal on Tuesday night.

Former Blues GM Ron Caron dies at 82

"Sometimes you can't explain things and how they happen or why they happen, but you just know somewhere that it's right," Blues President John Davidson said Tuesday when asked about the irony of his team playing a rare game in Montreal a day after Caron died.

Along with his colorful press box banter and loving relationship with the fans, Caron will be remembered as the general manager that brought two Hall of Famers to St. Louis from Calgary --Brett Hull and Al MacInnis.

"(His) love and passion for the game will never be equaled," Hull said Tuesday via text message. "Hockey will miss him. I will miss him."

The Blues acquired Hull from Calgary on March 7, 1988, along with Steve Bozek for defenseman Rob Ramage and goaltender Rick Wamsley.

Hull scored 527 goals with the Blues, by far the most of any player in franchise history.

Hull never forgot the confidence Caron showed him in by making that trade.

"I guess you don't really ever know how good you're going to be until you're given a chance," Hull told the News-Democrat in an earlier interview. "Ron Caron saw something in me and he got me to St. Louis. They put me in a situation where I was the No. 1 right winger on the top line and I was going to be the guy."

is the torque arm necessary on 82-92 gm f-bodys?

{camaro firebird} i hace found a 4 speed rock crusher and no torque arm bracket on the tranny

uh....yeah it is. it is a rear suspension component. unless you go with ladder bars or a 4 link you need to keep it.
either fab up a torque are mount or start shopping for what type of rear suspension you want...
in all reality, the rock crusher would be overkill. the weak link at that point would be the 7.5" rear. to me thats like putting a 454 in an otherwise stock chevette. one stout part that didnt really match all the others....
but hey, do what ya like. most wouldnt drop a 400 and 12 bolt in a turd elcamino like me.

Yes. It also keeps you from ripping the rear end out and keeps your pinion angle correct.

GM put it on there for added weight lol comeon, you know the answer to this yourself.

Does anyone have, or know where I can find a clutch linkage for an 82-83 Camaro/Firebird?

I have looked all over the internet and haven't had any luck. I have also called GM and they no longer sell them either. Thanks!

you need to know if its and 82 or an 83. 82 was like the last year of the big body style carmaro in 83 it went into a third generation carmaro.the linkage on these two cars are differnt.you need to know what your working with im gonna assume that you have an 83 because the 82 would look completly different.you will probally have to get one off of another car.

Camaro specialties.

They have them all.

The best answer I can give you is to start calling junkyards all over your home town to see if one of them have it. Maybe one of them can direct you in the right direction or if you haven't tried searching eBay yet I would suggest that too.

Good Luck finding your parts.

pick up the yellow pages look up automobile parts, used start calling there should be plenty of junk yards that still have those old camaros

You may have to check salvage yards for used linkages.

200 R4 Transmission: On this , does GM make 2 versions@ OD, D, 2,1 and OD,2,1?

82 Olds RWD: Not OD, looking at tranny from the bone yard, it is an OD, verified by oil pan, but it only has 3 drive shifts, and another has 4 drive shifts. My steering column has 3 drives, so the 1st option will work - but did 82 models have the OD integrated with the D? Went to GM and can't find manuals, and service don't know..

The 200R4 is a 4 speed automatic with a lockup convertor and should have OD,D,2,1. There was also a 200 Lockup that is a 3 speed with a lock up convertor that would have D,2,1. But I have never seen an OD trans with OD,2,1 on the shift selector.

How do you tell What kind of camaro you have?

Meaning..is it a berlinetta, an iroc z, or a z28. It doesn't say on the title, I just bought the car, all it says is that its an 82 camaro. My girlfriends dad is a GM Mechanic and says it kind of looks like the z28 body and it has an RS z28 hood, but that could be an after market hood. Is there any distinguished way to be able to tell what kind of camaro it is?

Well you look at the year.. 1982 on yours..

Then look at what models was made in that year.. In '82 you had
Sport Coupe
Berlinetta
Z28..
No RS, no Iroc

Then you match up your car's options/engine with what could be had for that year.

Z28's only came with the LG4 305 with 4bbl carb or LU5 305 with crossfire injetion (two throttle bodys)

Berlinetta only came with the LC1 2.8L v-6 or the LG4 305

Sport Coupe could have the LQ8 2.5 L 4 cyl, LQ9 2.5L 4 cyl, LC1 2.8L v-6, or the LG4 305 v-8

Now being some shares the same engines..

Sport coupes are the base model, no extras, just speedo, and gas gauge, rest warning lights

Berlinetta was a higher optioned car, had nicer seats, interior trim, body, etc plus it had the gauges.. speedo, tach, voltmeter, oil pressure, water temp and fuel level

Now a great eaay way to tell if it's a Z28... Look at the front nose/bumper.. The z28 didnt have the 3 horizontal slots above the grilles.. The sport coupes and Berlinettas did

The z28 also had "ground effects" on the side, rear and front of car under the norm body parts..

Looking for information on GM posi rear end for street/ strip car?

I got a great deal on a 78 nova, off year, but fun car, its already had alot of beefing up including sub frame conectors, rear sway bar, four wheel disc breaks, roll cage, etc, anyways, im building a big block that should be around 400 to 450 hp, already tracked down a th400 and got a decent stall speed. QUESTION: Previously iv only installed ring/ pinion in g body era gm 10 bolts, and i have an extra stock posi unit from an 82 g body, iv heard i could use a conversion kit to use this posi in the older style 8.5 10 bolt in the 78 nova? anyone tried this before? or am i better off looking for some other rear end all together? any insight or help would be appreciated, thanks
just did some research, that posi unit that was out of the 82 has 32 spline, 8.5 ring gear, from what im seeing, this would fit, but you had said that it should have been a 7.5? any info, or more research left to do?
sorry, wow, 28 spline, too late for work, ha, and a little more info, called the friend i got the posi from, he originally told me it was from a 4 door cutlass, just went and checked, its acctually from a 4 door 82 olds regency, and thanks all for your help so far, very appreciated, i had to work on hondas and audi's for 2 years, and so nice to work on a project thats interesting

No parts from an 7.5" 10 bolt (82 G body) will not fit the 8.5" 10 bolt.

Now good news is ALOT of cars had the 8.5" 10 bolts, (1971-81 camaro/firebird all had them and alot of stock posi rears)

IIRC the 8.5" uses 28 spline axles and I know the 7.5" uses 26 spline.

The newer posi units in the 7.5 rears are alot weaker too.

If your car already has a good gear, then you might want to look at a locker like the powertrax lockrite. It just replaces the spider and side gears, and works like a norm locker (locks under hard throttle, un locks around turns)

I had one in my 1988 camaro 7.5" 10 bolt, 500 HP, 11.40's @ 118 mph, 1.62 60' time, but broke the ring gear on that weak rear, locker not hurt at all, got another 7.5" 10 bolt, installed locker in it, broke pinion later on that one.. Locker still not damaged.

Went to a ford 9" with full detroit locker.

My camaro is daily driven, with the lockert and even auto cross raced a few times a year
