Pete's Tire Barns comes to Montpelier

MONTPELIER Theres a new tire company in town Petes Tire Barns Inc.

With the opening of its Montpelier location, the New England tire chain headquartered in Orange, Mass., now has four Vermont stores and 17 in New England.

The shop is at 122 Gallison Hill Road, where GCR Tire Center operated until it closed earlier this year.

Manager Cliff Fleury has worked in that location for eight years.

He said that Peter Gerry, the founder and owner of Petes Tire Barns, is one of the nicest guys youll ever meet.

Right now, Fleury said, its just him working there, but the plan is to have a shop with five or six employees.

He likes big jobs, like tractor-trailers, but Fleury said he wont turn down any job whether its new radials for a Subaru or a wheelbarrow tire.

Petes Tire Barns says it aims to be green, too.

The company has its own solar-powered retreading facility to reuse and recycle used tires.

MOUNTAINS: Tire chains required due to ice, snow

Ice and snow continue to blanket roads in the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains where tire chains are required, Caltrans officials say.

“I would think it would remain in effect for most of the day,” Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said shortly before 8:30 a.m.

The weekend storm dumped more than a foot of snow in the upper reaches of both mountain ranges, according to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service.

Leading the list: Big Bear Lake with 16 inches, Big Bear City at 15, and 13 inches in Idyllwild.

Also digging out today are residents of Onyx Summit and Pine Cove, both with 11 inches, Forest Falls, nine inches, and Wrightwood, seven inches. Even Cherry Valley posted three inches.

Rainfall accumulations topped an inch in about 20 locations.

Lake Arrowhead topped the list with exactly six inches.

At the base of the Cajon Pass, the community of Devore recorded 2.91 inches. Elsewhere, Rock Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains registered 2.84 inches, Lytle Creek, 2.81, Silverado, 2.76, Beaumont, 2.09., and Santiago Peak, 2.05.

Do I need the tire chains for my 4x4 SUV?

I will drive my Honda Pilot 4WD to Lake Tahoe in couple of days. Somebody told I still need the tire chain when the road condition is bad. Do I? If so, which local store sells them? Thanks!

Honda Pilots are only true 4WD vehicles up to 18 MPH in the first two gears. Anything above that and it reverts to AWD which entails a totally different set of driving dynamics. If you put chains on this car you will need them on all 4 wheels.
If you go to Tahoe you may require chains but, most importantly, you will also need a good set of 4 snow tires.

You shouldn't need chains but I guess since they aren't to expensive to buy it doesn't hurt to have them incase conditions are real bad. And if for some reason you would need them put them on the front wheels.

I dont know if you need to or not, but i know that a lot of automotive stores sell tire chains. My local wal-mart even has tire chains in stock regularly

I have P225/75/R16 Tires on a SUV, can I use chains for LT225/75/R16?

I cannot find Tire Chains for my P225/75/R16 tires, but can find them for LT225/75/R16, can I use those or is there some major difference that makes it dangerous? I am driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Thanks!

Yes you can. The best way to be absolutely certain is to put them on . It would be a good idea to put them on as practice. Get familiar with them in your driveway. There is nothing worse that trying to untangle chains you are unfamiliar with in a snowstorm along an icy road with traffic passing inches away.Practice where it is warmer and dryer and your fingers are warm.

yes, same size.

Do I still need snow chains for my tires if I just bought brand new all season tires for my SUV?

I'm traveling to S Lake Tahoe in my 4 Wheel drive suv with brand new tires. Do I still need to put on snow chains on my tires? Does the CHP require them for ALL vehicles if really bad weather?

The purpose of snow chains is to give your vehicle extra traction that tires without chains would not. All season tires have traction already but it does help when you add the chains. It also depends on how bad the weather is in the particular area you will be traveling to. If the snow is in a large mass then yes, you will need to have chains, but if the snow is moderate or low, then no you won't. My suggestion to you is to be prepared. In order to do that, you must look at the weather conditions ahead of time by television or internet. Get an idea of how much snow or ice the area will be expecting. The more snow, the more likely you will need the snow chains. Gauge it based on the weather conditions and the reports.

Yes you still need snow chains if the weather is bad..

1. All season tires are not the same as winter tires.

2. Best to put them on all wheels.

In Lake Tahoe all season tires are referred to as 3 season tires. All season tires are useless in really deep snow conditions. If the road signs say chains required, it doesn't matter what tires you have anyway. You must use chains.

ive never needed tire chains on any 4x4. now if it was 4x2 then snow chains i would recomend but come on its 4x4

Yes, put chains on or buy snow tires. All seasons are no good in the extremes of any season.

car tire chains?

i was wondering how much tire chains usually cost for an suv. Also, if chains are required, do you need them on all 4 tires or just 2?

Around $50 a set. Don't usually need if you have mud and snow tyres (in days past no chains needed with radial tyres) An SUV well no chains are req. if 4WD

Snow Chains in Lake Tahoe?

I'm planning a trip to Lake Tahoe on Jan 1st. There is going to be snow, and I'm bringing a 4x4 SUV. I was wondering is it mandatory to have chains on the tires in order to drive there? Or will M+S tires do the cut?? And how would I know if chains are required or not in a specific area?

If chains are required, you'll know it. The CHP will have a road block set up, and they won't let you pass unless you have chains installed.... But, for most situations, a 4x4 with a good set of snow tires installed will be adequate.
