Will putting msd spark plug wires and accel performance spark plugs increase HP on Dodge daytona 3.0 V6 SOHC?
Feb 22, 2008 by irish_guy88 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a 91 dodge daytona 3.0 V6 SOHC FI and my buddy insists that if i put msd plug wires and accel performance spark plugs on it that it will increase the horsepower, so im just wondering if that is true. 2nd question i would like to put a K&N cold air intake in it but they dont make the kit for it and the guy i talked to at the local advanced auto parts said that it can't be done on that engine because the air intake runs through the ecu, so does anyone know if this can be done or not and if so how i would do it? Last part of the question, what else can be done to increase the horsepower on the car. I'm trying to get it ready for the spectator drag races this summer.
P.S. i know this isnt the car of choice for most people when it comes to racing but i've put a lot of time into this car both body and engine work, and i find it to be a lot of fun to drive while i finish my 78 trans am y88. Thank you for your time and have a good day/night.
no you won't get more horsepower, you will get a better spark and make better use of the horsepower you have.
As far as a cold air kit I would just buy a K&N air filter and put it in the stock air box, you will get the same results other than the sucking noise. If you want a little more horsepower you could put a header on it and a good flowing exhaust system.

blower package or twin turbo probably use 9mm accel wires with 160v msd coil and quad fire plugs

I would like to know how high performance (Hei, Msd, Accel,) ignition parts r better than stock.?
Jan 13, 2009 by Liquid_Fox | Posted in Ford
I want to replace all my stock ignition parts like my distributor cap n rotor for a 66 Ford 289, but not sure what brand to go with. The way i see it ignition is ignition.
not exactly there are all kinds of performance ignition parts out there and most are guaranteed to increase performance. Like an msd controller box with macthing distributor. What the msd box does is it creates a multiple spark discharge (msd) to better burn fuel. Instead of one spark to ignite the gas it has several. A high out put coil and low resistance wires are also a good way to go, it's an easy swap and you will see a noticeable gain. Just go with the wires that do not have a radio suppression core. but i would say do a little research and I'm sure you will find the right combination.

I bet they produce a better spark. But that's not performance to me. Just like people with stock engines upgrading to a k&n air filter, plug wires, etc.
brad | Jan 13, 2009
unless you are running in the 8 to 9 grand rpm range there
is no difference
cement211 | Jan 13, 2009
High performance ignition usually means better grade of spark plug leads and a higher output coil. The coil produces a fatter, hotter spark resulting in better fuel burn and keeps the spark plugs cleaner. A more complete burn should give you a little more power and less fuel consumption.
To get the hotter spark you need to use carbon leads .

Stay away from Accell.
The big plug wires are only needed if you use the big MSD box. Otherwise it's money thrown away.
If your just doing a basic tune-up, stick with the Motorcraft stuff.

Will performance Plug wires make a good difference on my stock Grand Prix gt?
Feb 10, 2008 by jessetruitt3 | Posted in Pontiac
I'm looking to upgrade my plug wires. I've been looking at msd ignition wires, or accel brand, maybe taylor. Would a performance 8mm or even 8.5mm wire be beneficial to my stock Grand prix? (non supercharged 3.8L) Would there be any problems in adding these wires to my car?
Save your money and keep it stock. Use the delco wires that the factory put on and use delco replacement parts. Aftermarket pieces are way to general, and will more than likely create a problem you never had before. Then you need to buy it again! They built the car and know what works and doesn't work!
newera195 | Feb 11, 2008
The 3.8 3800 Series II really does not accept mods wheel, so I would keep everything stock inorder to insure the life of that engine.
hopefulkidofaith | Feb 10, 2008
They probably won't make a noticeable difference on a stock non-supercharged motor unless the ones you have are bad. Nology wires make a difference on blown/turbo/nitrous cars that are highly modified. I doubt if they make them for your car and they are expensive!
BOB M | Feb 10, 2008
NO!...keep to the 7mm. no matter if you got supercharger.Bigger wires need higher voltage... what these cars today havent got,but if you go with new coils and a reprogrammed EMC with no limiter.Nice motor my 3.1 is at 195hp now..
who | Feb 11, 2008
Dont waste your money.......go to autozone, advance, napa, pep boys and get a set of original parts wires for your car.......might be a good idea to do a tuneup also....put in new plugs and an 02 sensor.......autozone has their own brand too and they are good, AC Delco will be double the price......
bigmikeumpire | Feb 11, 2008
there would be no problem adding either 8 or 8.5 wires the biggest benefit would be that you may not have to replace them as soon again being that your using good name brand wires
bigjim20019 | Feb 11, 2008
Stick with the stock wires. Just make sure to clean the coil posts every once and a while, they rust or corrode causing misfires. I've been running the Autolite Titanium spark plugs and they work great. Get a K&N air filter that fits the stock housing and do the cat back exhaust.
3800 performance has a great web site for Grand Prix upgrades.
thebax2006 | Feb 11, 2008
the gm 3.8 is voted as one of the 10 best engines in the world! it takes mods very well!!! the buick grand nation had a 3.8 and the bottom end is good for like 800 whp or something.
grand prix are grat cars to mod, you can get like 400+ hp from a 3.8. they make turbo kits for them, larger aftermarket superchargers, intakes, exhausts, computers, everything

Can someone give me a list of cars that are performance cars?
Aug 12, 2007 by Science wonder | Posted in Other - Car Makes
Im turning 16 soon and where I live back-street racing is real big. You only get respec if you can race. So can anyone give me a list of cars that are performance cars and prices to go along with them. Also, if you can name anything to make the car faster, accel better brake better, Ect. Thanks in advance.
Top 10 sportscars
1. Ford Mustang
The All-American pony car has always been a favorite among shoppers on MSN Autos. Available in a coupe or convertible, the rear-wheel-drive Mustang is one of the most affordable sports cars today with a starting price of under $20,000. The GT is neck-snapping fast with its 4.6-liter 300-horsepower V8, but the 4.0-liter 210-horsepower V6 version is no slouch either. As in most coupes, the rear seats are not recommended for adults but the trunk is decently sized. For power-hungry enthusiasts, opt for the 500-horsepower Shelby GT500.
2. Chevrolet Corvette
It was just one year ago that Chevrolet added the fastest Corvette ever with the Z06. Not to be confused with the regular 'Vette, the Z06 is a 505-horsepower demon with a top speed of 196 mph. But such a powerful sports car still gets impressive fuel economy at an estimated 16/26 mpg for city/hwy. The Z06 is a blast to drive with excellent handling but the ride can get a bit bumpy. About $56,000.
3. Nissan 350Z
The "Z" car has been a hit ever since its return in 2003 with racy styling and high performance. Nissan is giving enthusiasts another reason to drool over this sports car with the introduction of the NISMO 350Z for 2007. NISMO is Nissan's performance products division and it is giving the Z special enhancements including a racier-sounding exhaust, NISMO-tuned independent multilink suspension, Brembo brakes and lightweight RAYS wheels. Price for the NISMO 350Z will start under $40,000.
4. BMW M3
The high-performance version of the popular 3-Series is an enthusiasts' favorite and is due for an update in 2008. Expected to be unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the fourth-generation 2008 M3 is redesigned to maximize performance with its lightweight construction. Based on the 3-Series coupe, the 2008 M3 will have the most powerful M3 engine ever—a 420-horsepower 3.0-liter V8 that delivers 295 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes about 4.8 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Price TBA.
5. Mitsubishi Eclipse
Mitsubishi gave the Eclipse a new look two years ago and then added a convertible version, called the Spyder, for 2007. The soft-top takes about 20 seconds to lower with a push-button operation. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter 162-horsepower 4-cylinder engine in the GS and a 3.8-liter 263-horsepower V6 in the GT. With so much power in the V6, there is considerable torque steer—unwanted pulling of the front end to the side during hard acceleration. Inside, drivers may find the motorcycle-style gauges hard to see but its ice blue backlighting looks futuristic during nighttime driving. From $19,999
6. Saturn Sky
Sporty and racy are not words that people would usually associate with Saturn, but the all-new Sky roadster may be changing that. A sibling of the Pontiac Solstice, the Sky looks larger, more solid and a touch wider; however, the two do not share any body panels. The Sky has great handling ability with virtually no body lean on tight curves or during swift lane changes. Braking is strong and the ride is more comfortable than the Solstice. If the base 177-horsepower engine isn't powerful enough, opt for the turbocharged 260-horsepower Sky Red Line. starts at $29,995
7. Porsche 911
The regular 911 is already plenty fast with 325 - 355 horsepower, so how much faster are the new additions for 2007: the GT3 and 911 Turbo? Powered by a 415-horsepower 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine, the GT3 is a track-focused car so it won't be as comfortable as the 911 Turbo. On the contrary, the Porsche Turbo is twin-turbocharged and has an output of 480 horsepower. It has a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and can hit 100 mph in 8.4 seconds with the standard 6-speed transmission. But the acceleration is even faster with the automatic transmission—a first for Porsche—and can be shifted manually via small rocker type switches on the steering wheel. Starts at $126,000.
8. Mazda MX-5 Miata
With more retractable hardtop convertibles around the $30,000 mark now available, such as the Volkswagen Eos and Pontiac G6, Mazda decided to give one to the popular MX-5 Miata for 2007. The power retractable top is available for all versions except the entry-level SV trim. Regardless of the type of top it has, the MX-5 is always a kick to drive and has good fuel economy. Weighing under 2,700 pounds, it has lively acceleration but a downshift from sixth gear to fifth or four gear is necessary for fast 65-75 mph passing. Starts at $21,180
9. Ford Shelby GT500
Based on the Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT500 was developed by legendary racer/car builder Carroll Shelby and Ford's Special Vehicle Team. This modern muscle car is powered by an Eaton-supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine that delivers a neck-snapping 460 lb-ft of torque. The GT500 is quite heavy at 3,920 pounds for the coupe and 4,040 pounds for the convertible, but it still can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and 0 to 100 mph in 10.3 seconds. As a member of the 500-horsepower club, the Shelby is also the lowest cost 500-horsepower car offered by any automaker, with a starting price of under $41,000.
10. Pontiac Solstice
To give more appeal to the Solstice, Pontiac added a new turbocharged GXP version for 2007. It is GM's first gasoline direct-injection turbocharged engine and it pumps out 260 horsepower with no turbo lag. To put it in perspective, the Solstice does 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and reaches 100 mph in 14.3 seconds. Other enhancements over the base version include better-gripping tires, a sport suspension, a special black grille, a small "chin" spoiler and polished dual exhaust outlets. For under $27,000, the GXP is arguably a better buy because of the superior engine and optional equipment not available on the base version.

What size fuel injectors should I use in my Dakota?
Nov 03, 2006 by abnormallynormalguy | Posted in Dodge
I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota with a 318, bored out .030, 9.5-1 compression, lightweight TRW pistons, balanced and weight matched Eagle rods, stock crank, balanced rolling assembly, Crane Compucam 2000 mild cam, 1.6 roller rockers, heavy valve springs, Mopar double roller timing chain with a spring-loaded slack adjuster, Mopar M1 intake manifold, soon to be getting a opened-up throttle body. its a 95 so it has the higher pressure fuel pump. It also has Pacesetter headers, dual 2-1/2 inch exhaust, Mopar Performance ECM, Accel coil, huge gauge champion truck spark plug wires, and double platinum plugs. My question is with all that nifty stuff, what size injectors should I use? I have been told the stockers are 19lb/hr, thats whats on it now, but I have been told the 24lb'ers are a good upgrade for those motors, but I have also been told that the 24's are only good up to 350 hp, or something. I figure maybe 30's, but I want a second opinion or two. Those things are not cheap. Any ideas?
Duration is not the only factor you have to consider when choosing fuel injectors. The amount of fuel delivered in that duration is the major factor. This is where the lb/hr figures come in to play. Seeing as how you are running 9.5 to 1 compression (obviously built to run on lower octane gasoline) , I would consider continuing to run the the stock fuel injectors. Your engine control module (ECM) should be more than up to the task of handling the modifications, as airflow should still be within the OEM parameters, even with a bored out TB. On another note, if you're having the TB opened up wider, make sure you get the intake matched to the new bore, and consider having the runners in the intake opened up as well. A bottle-necked induction system will in most cases perform worse than a stock setup.
