What is engine timing?

Question: What is engine timing?

Answer: Engine timing is the proper alignment of an engine's crankshaft and camshaft(s); this allows for the engine to operate efficiently and correctly.

Timing is critical to an engines performance and will cause many significant problems if not adjusted or set correctly. Timing will be set differently depending on the engine from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Many older engines used what is known as a High Efficiency Ignition system also known as HEI. The system is easily identified when a distributor is used on the engine.

Timing engines such as this requires knowledge of many aspects; with steps that must be followed.

The first step to setting the timing of the engine will be to get the piston of cylinder number one to TDC (Top Dead Center); this is the point at which the piston is at its upper-most point. Once TDC on cylinder one has been achieved the next step is to align other necessary engine components.

Jeep Creep: Reader Tech Questions Answered

Im new to the Jeep world, and I have two questions: 1. If I decide to make a change, does the 1994 Wrangler 4-cylinder engine housing bolt up to an inline 6-cylinder? 2. What would be the best off-road magazine to fit my information on outfitting the 1994 Wrangler as far as information on engine conversions, such as adapter plates or upsizing to other engines (such as V8s) or suspension?

I suggest that you take a peek at Advance Adapters website ( http://www.advanceadapters.com/ ) for complete information on bolting up a 4-liter in place of your four banger (or sliding in a V8). AA can also supply the new motor mounts and radiator that youll need for the conversion. Advance Adapters, as they have been since John Partridge began the company nearly 40 years ago, is the last word in four-wheeler conversions. For print magazines, Jp and 4Wheel Drive are good choices. But theres also a good amount of info on Off-Road.Com of course, such as this build following a V8 install: Source: Off-Road.com

How-to video for the Factory Pro Ignition Rotor Installation on a Yamaha R6

how does an ignition rotor contributes to an engine?

if an ignition rotor gets worn out what kind of problem
does it cause an engine?

Loss of spark and rough idle. Or it may not start at all.

The ignition is designed to emit a spark to each spark plug at a precise time. When the fuel and air mixture in the cylinder is optimum, the spark ignites and forces the piston down, in effect raising another piston, and so on, and so on.

When the rotor wears out, it increases the distance between itself, and the contact points on the inside of the distributor cap. This reduces the spark output, intensity, and overall quality, resulting in bad performance.

Side note. The rotor is on the end of the distributor shaft. This shaft is connected to the cam shaft via an interlocking tooth gear. This enables the motor to be timed to 'fire' at precise intervals. This way the spark is delivered to what piston is in the 'fire' position.

It can cause back firing.Miss firing and loss of power. It may not function at all.

the rotor transmits the spark from the coil to the plug wires and when the rotor goes bad or gets worn it will cause a miss or hard starting or complete failure.

after i got a new distributor cap and rotor ignition my 1992 honda accord still misfires, why is that? t up dn?

just got a tune up, ignition wire set, valve gasket changed, rotor ignition, distributor cap, camshaft seal replaced, water pump, timing belt, and my car still stutters and misfires.

Vacuum leak? sucking air into the engine.
Bad spark plug? it happens.
Plugged fuel filter?
Old gas?
Crappy gas?

I would say mass airflow sensor or a fuel pump or even a coil pack

a bad valve not seated properly, can cause misfire also. or bad coil

Could be any of the above, a bad plug, coil or coil pack firing too late or early, or MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) or MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor issue.

How do I remove my ignition rotor on 92 civic?

Theres one screw holdin it on but the rotor is like stuck onthere.

If you plan on replacing the rotor, I would take that screw out and usig a screw driver, carefully pry the rotor off. If this doesn't work, break the rotor, just make sure you get the metal insert off the distributor shaft.

Will an electronic tach that runs off the ignition rotor continue to read RPM even if spark isn't at the plugs

I have an itermitent mis/die at cruising speed, the tach still reads RPM smoothly, this makes me think fuel ,but I've been through the whole system, tank, filter jets and all ?
Will the tach still read RPM if there's no fire in the cylinders ?
The tach wire comes off the ignition module not the coil.

You are right... the elec ign will send a pulse to the tach seperate from the coil. Somewhere between the ignition, coil and plugs is your problem. Loose wire on coil... timing off... couple of guesses...

where can i find the ignition rotor and cap in my 2000 honda accord?

take off your engine cover and look for the wires going into the cylinder head then follow them away from the cylinder head and where they leed is the rotor but since its a newer car im not sure if it has one they might have a infared system or the magnet kind like on the scion, i dont no much about accords
