Spark-plug maker Johnson Matthey is a breath of fresh air for all of us
"We're positioned in markets where we think there's structural growth driven by the environment and environmental legislation," says Carson.
That approach has delivered a £5 bn market value and profits at its last year-end of £260 m, an increase of 14 pc.
"In a flat car market for example, we would still get growth because in various regions around the world the legislation is saying 'we have to have cleaner cars'. We have a third of the world market. We're a very science-based business and we are striving to make a better catalyst, a smaller catalyst that will save people money and make money for us."
But precious metals remain at the heart of the business. "That's the place to start. The thread that runs through all our divisions is precious metals. Spinning out of that have come the environmental technologies and fine chemicals divisions."
One crucial fact to know about Johnson Matthey's precious metals divisions, and why it has such a strong position in catalytic converters, is that it has the sole marketing agency deal with the world's leading platinum miner – AngloAmerican Platinum.
E3 Spark Plugs Monster Truck Nationals roar into town
SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY ... er, today and Saturday. The chorus of engines rumbling, the crunch of steel on steel and the odor of burning rubber will fill the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend. The only questions is: Are you ready for some monster madness? Monster truck madness, that is.
On March 30-31, the arena will be home to the E3 Spark Plugs Monster Truck Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.
Emily Boden, from The Promotion Company/Family Events, promised a good time for all who attend.
“At this event, you will see some ground-pounding, car-crushing action that is bound to get your attention,” she said. “You will see six monster trucks compete in the doughnut, wheelie, drag racing and freestyle competitions which the fans will be able to vote for the winner.”
Fans will judge all events except the drag racing contest.
Boden added, “Plus you will be able to see the world’s youngest monster truck drivers featuring Kid KJ in Monster Bear, Jake in Sir Crush A Lot and Cassie in Demolition Diva. You will also witness Transaurus munching on a car and breathing fire.”
