CARS Expo Brings High Performance Auto to Santa Clara

Bringing together an array of some of the most advanced automotive performance product suppliers and a superfluity of unique and well-maintained custom, nostalgic and racing vehicles, the California Automotive and Racing Specialty Expo (CARS) recently visited Santa Clara.

Able to explore just about anything automotive-related, Auto aficionados browsed the selection of performance parts and an array of vehicles.

Vehicles exhibited included street rods, muscle cars, classic cars, show cars, trucks and race cars, including a 350HP open-wheel, open-cockpit Dirt track Midget race car, a Japanese Drift vehicle, a drag racing boat, a BAJA 1000 Off-Road racing truck, a Street Mod Vintage Dragster, plus a wide range of vintage muscle cars. Street vehicles included a 1958 NASH Metropolitan, a 1966 Shelby Cobra GT-350, a pristine Plymouth Roadrunner and several more.

Automotive performance companies including Auto Meter, Edelbrock, Fel-Pro, Airaid, Quickfuel, MSD, Stop-Tech displayed their latest products, along with having factory representatives available for consumers "to discuss how to make your car or truck get down the track faster, the road smoother, use less fuel, or even stop faster."

MSD ignitions?

Has anyone tried using the "msd blaster ignition"? i was going to buy one for my 89 thunderbird, but figured i would ask about them first. Did it show a noticable difference?
Not a coil, an ignition...

I use MSD 6A's on my vintage cars. If your car has a factory electronic ignition and fuel injection, you're probably not going to see any difference. MSD's help when you have a sloppy carburetor, points ignition, or if you have changed to high compression pistons. Also good for sustained high RPM running. Perfect for a 60's Plymouth. Shouldn't be needed on your car.

you can buy a replacement coil, like an OEM part, and get the same results

I wouldnt waste your money. Not to say that msd doesnt make a good coil. But on your aplication unless you have a built up 302 I would stick with your stock coil.

What is a MSD ignition? And does it do to your engine? Is it going to help boosting power?

I am about to buy an engine and this guy is seeling a MSD ignition. I dont know what it is for. Could you please help me out here?

MSD stands for multiple spark discharge. It makes a hotter more intense spark, and if properly mated with other performance aspects of the engine, then it will produce more power.

MSD is a racing ignition. If it comes complete with wires and all, look it up on the internet for prices based on what engine you are buying and make sure you wont be paying more than 70% what it is new.

Will an msd ignition box increase the horse power of my 99 grand am?

I have a 99 grand am with a 2.4l engine and wanted to know if an msd ignition control box would increase the hp and if so should I get the MSD 6AL Ignition Box or the MSD 6BTM Ignition box ?

The igniton people might say this or that, but IMO and through experience, yes you can get more horsepower, 3 or 5 hp. if you're lucky, that's nice, and cleaner, better fuel burning and all the advantages of that. Cleaner cylinders, valves, sensors, etc. I think it's worth it.

you do not need to buy a msd box! mds makes a drop on coil and module for the 2.4, to put in the box style you will have to lose the engine cover and the short wires and coils! just get the drop in and you will get up t 10 hp, if you did you exhaust, and not a tube but a real exhaust with a hi flow cat a 21/2 pipe a good muffler not a nois maker!

It won't increase the power enough for you to feel it or see any difference in gas mileage.

i doubt it. ignition boxes were made for distributors that only put out 30k volts. your ignition coil puts out 80-100k volts. i think it would be a waiste of money.

good luck

94 Suburban with MSD Ignition, do I need special spark plugs?

I just bought a 1994 suburban and the owner told me he had an msd ignition. Does that type of ignition need special spark plugs or can I use stock? Also, there was a performance head and cam installed, so how does this affect the gap for the spark plugs?
If anyone can help me please let me know. I'm not a mechanic and don't have the money right now to have someone service it, so i'm doing it myself.

Since both the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) (GM) and the MSD are High Energy Ignition systems (HEI), then my guess is that you'd best use the same spark plugs specified in your car's owner's manual. However, you could also check the MSD website and see what tech support information they have.
If the past owner installed platinum spark plugs (compare to your owner's manual), then they should be good for 80,000 miles assuming you haven't had one fail. Make sure the spark plug wires were changed when the MSD was installed.

Will a MSD ignition increase my gas mileage?

I have a 2003 regular cab short bed Dodge Ram with the 5.9 V8 and the off road 4x4 package. Will adding a MSD ignition improve my gas mileage?

No it will not....A k&n intake and air filter will help a little...You can also spend about 300.00 on a bully dog set up for your truck...You will see a difference then...The bully doge set up was originally made to increase fuel mielage on diesels...They now do gas also...With this combo you will save fuel....www.bullydog.com
