Transport company debuts a voluntary 90km/h speed limit for its trucks
In an environment of ongoing tensions between car and truck drivers, the managing director of Ryans Transport, servicing routes from South Australia across Western and South West Victoria, declares there are three reasons why the 12 new trucks his company has purchased will be speed-limited to 90 kilometres per hour.
"Safety, environment and economics," says Graham Ryan.
"If you look at trucks, for years and years and years [when a] truck is involved in an accident, it's not car caused, it's trucks, and in recent times what you see on the news - horrific accidents with trucks, trains, buses, things like that - the media view of transport is the trucks are too close behind cars, trucks are passing in the wrong places; there's a hell of a lot of pressure on the drivers in the transport industry as such."
Geoff Ryan says the level of safety generated by restricting semi-trailer trucks to 90km/h increases generously, and allows for greater room for both the truck driver to manage problems a well as offering car drivers a much easier target to reach in order to overtake trucks on the open road.
Boca man says auto transport firm took him for a ride
It's the time of year when snowbirds begin to head back north. Many take a flight back while their vehicles are delivered by an auto transporter.
Auto transport firms are brokers who hire truckers to actually transport the vehicles.
How do people know they can trust the company they hire?
Word-of-mouth and referrals from friends who have used the firm are a good start.
The transport industry advises checking with the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org to see if the company has any complaints against it.
Also, do a Google search online to look for other complaints, although it's difficult to determine whether the reports, positive or negative, are legitimate.
Check with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to see whether the company's MC number is valid and active. Go to fmcsa.dot.gov.
Boca Raton-based Transport Services Inc. has an "F" rating, the lowest possible rating, and 171 complaints with the BBB in the last three years.
