Michigan's Auto Industry Workers, Republicans at a Crossroads
23.05.12
WARREN, Mich. | If you want a sense of the challenges Mitt Romney and the GOP have in Michigan, you could learn a lot from standing on the corner of Mound and East 9 Mile roads here in suburban Detroit .
As the workers filed out at the end of their shift Monday at the Chrysler plant here, they had few kinds words to offer the former Massachusetts governor or his party. When asked if they were planning on voting Tuesday most offered befuddled looks or, from one worker, a half-minute of laughter before he said, "My mother said don't say anything if you can't say anything nice."
This is auto industry country, and the people who work in the Chrysler plant or the General Motors plant across the street are not pleased that all of the Republican candidates for president opposed the federal auto bailout that saved their jobs.
Some may assume that the workers here, loyal members of the United Auto Workers, never would have voted for a Republican anyway, but that's not completely accurate. This is Macomb County, the birthplace of swing-voting Reagan Democrats, and many of these workers have voted for Republicans in the past, even in 2008. In 10 random interviews in the course of an hour here, three workers said they voted for McCain.

Need an online site w/ auto glass part numbers (NAGS) and vehicle listing.?

Only reason you would need this is if you plan on opening or already have an auto glass business. Go to www.ppgautoglass.com and register as a buyer and you can have online access to the above info. (The printed guide is a little easier to use)

Prob. w/ a honda as I am not able to cause starter to engage. Batt and start, are ok as per auto store-help?
Jul 20, 2006 by cj | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Have a 1990 Honda. Am not able to cause starter to engage. Starter and Batt were taken in to auto parts store and both are OK. Need ideas and methods to bypass ignition switch and safety switch so I may ck sys. by way of elimination. Ideas? or other approaches will help -thanks???????
sounds like a neutral safty switch. you will need a jumper wire to by pass the switch if it is a manual look under the dash on the clutch pedal at the top their should be a plunger type switch un plug it and then use the gumper wire good luck

A new ignition switch will probably fix your problem but it can be a pain in the butt to change. On most cars you have to pull the steering wheel to take out the ignition switch. A new switch will only caost about 5 or 10 dollars but like I said it can take alot of time and be a major pain to do.

Which oil do you prefer?
Sep 03, 2010 by quepasameng | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Okay there is an oil change special.
Autozone
CASTROL GTX W/ FRAM FILTER
Advance Auto Parts
Vavoline w/ Purolator Filter
Which would you choose? The Advance Auto Parts special is a dollar more than the other. Both include 5 quarts and the filter listed.
Do not use a Fram filter they don't call them orange canisters of death for nothing.

Vavoline !
Irfan H | Sep 03, 2010
Well it all depends on the mile mark on your car. Personally i have always gone with the autozone deal with the fram i haven't had any problems.
Jeff | Sep 03, 2010
i have always like vavoline, so i suggest going for them. my personal thoughts on the filter goes either way, so i say screw the dollar and get vavoline oil!!
man of many sports | Sep 03, 2010
I have used both oils I'm just partial to Castrol. I've never had a problem with Fram parts.
the_boy_toy | Sep 03, 2010
Purolator is a far better filter than Fram. As far as oil its not that big of a difference.
Compressorstall | Sep 03, 2010
I prefer a synthetic oil. My new car I go 10,000 miles between oil changes.
My older vehicles 25,000 miles. Never have had a oil related problem.

Without question I'd choose Valvoline and a Purolator Gold oil filter. Did you ever see cheap discount store Fram filters cut open in a NAPA store? Only a box store would sell crappy low dollar Fram filters. Valvoline is better than any type of Castrol day or night!

How do I determine if my 2003 Elantra needs a new battery?
Jul 10, 2006 by Chow_M_Noodles | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
How can I tell if the battery is able to hold a charge, w/o going to an auto parts store? The battery died twice over the last month, but boosted right back up. Also, what is the proper battery for this model?
It wont start is a good indication. Or it is starting but only after you call it a few choice names first.

I have a 2003 Ford Focus w/ a malfunctioning solenoid?
Sep 18, 2006 by tytypeck | Posted in Ford
Recentley the transmission started to slip. It will go as high as 2nd gear and then it revs real high and won't go faster then 35 mph before it slips completley out of gear. I took it to an auto parts store and they checked all fluids and said they were fine and then ran a diagnostic test on it. It came up with a P750 indicating that it was the shift soleniod malfunctioning. And when I asked them what the symtoms of a malfunctioning shift soleniod were they described everything that was happening with my car. They sounded pretty accurate. But when I called around to find someone to fix it they all said it was probley more then just the shift soleniod. I don't want to get ripped off and have someone tell me that there's more problems then there really are, but, I also want my car fixed. Do I believe the guy at the auto parts store or some rip-off mechanic?
Find a mechanic you can trust (check with friends, etc...) and let him diagnose and correct the problem. Trying to diagnose a problem yourself and then getting someone else to fix it is maddening for both you and the mechanic you hire. The auto parts store may be able to recommend a trustworthy soul for you.
