Bantam AAs narrowly miss crossovers
The Pictou County Wonder Auto Bantam AA Crushers hosted the 28th bantam Memorial Tournament this past weekend and came away with a win, a loss and a tie.
The Bantam AAs played their first game Thursday night in Trenton before a large crowd of spectators against the Glace Bay Miners.
Morgan Peters opened the scoring midway through the first frame assisted by Matt Propser on the power play. Glace Bay tied it up in the next minute on their own power play and then scored three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead into the third. Glace Bay added another goal in the third before Ryan Dykstra replied for the Crushers on a pass from Kyle Sutherland and Chance MacDonald. The final score was 5-2 for the Miners. Peters was named game MVP.
On Saturday, the Crushers took on the TASA Ducks at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium. Kirk Murray and Robert Burrows scored in the first period before TASA came back to tie it up in the second. Burrows and Peters drew assists on the goals. Keil MacDonald scored an unassisted shorthanded goal late in the second only to have TASA tie it again on the same power play. TASA scored early in the third to take their first lead of the game but Burrows scored his second of the game to tie it up at four each. Stellar goaltending by Kieran MacGillivray earned him the MVP honours for the game.
Auto Outlook: Higher gas prices to spur hybrid sales
Soaring gasoline prices have become a rite of summer in the 21st century. With predictions of an imminent return to $4 a gallon gas in much of the nation, will consumers in the market for a new vehicle again take a look at hybrids and all-electric plug-ins?
Manufacturers sure hope so. In fact, nearly a dozen automakers are banking on it.
Analysts predict pump prices for gasoline could jump by as much as 60 cents per gallon by Memorial Day, pushing premium to more than $5 per gallon, just as U.S. automakers are enjoying a surge in sales of new passenger cars, trucks and crossover SUVs.
"It's going to be a chaotic spring, with huge (gas) price increases in some places," Tom Kloza , of the Oil Pricing Information Service, told Hybrid Cars.com.
Gas at $4 a gallon historically has been a trigger for Americans to begin changing their buying and driving habits. The last few years, sales of fuel-efficient vehicles have taken off with the higher fuel prices, with cars like the Toyota Prius and other hybrids coveted as sales of big pickups, large SUVs and vans sagged.

The 2011 Lexus CT 200h is aa small wagon that shares the Prius' drivetrain. It also offers a practical shape, good handling, and fuel economy of around 40 mpg. Get the free local car news and events app from Jacksonville.com. Search "pod rods" in your and more »
