Knox gas prices push higher; oil hits 9-month high
Knoxville gasoline prices pushed higher on Friday to just under $3.50 a gallon on average — a relative bargain compared to pump prices in Tennessee's other metropolitan markets.
The average price of regular unleaded gas in metro Knoxville jumped 2 cents overnight to $3.498, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Guage Report.
Diesel increased 1.3 cents to an average of $3.863.
Retail fuel costs have trended up since the first of the year. In the last month, the average gas price in Knoxville has increased more than 21 cents, the auto club reported.
Temporarily at least, Knoxville is the only major market in Tennessee with an average gas price below $3.50.
Nashville has the highest current average at $3.564 followed by the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol area at $3.543.
Today's average prices in other Tennessee metro markets are:
— Memphis, $3.502
— Chattanooga, $3.51
— Clarksville, $3.52
Meanwhile, oil prices are approaching last year's highs as tensions increase over Iran's nuclear program. The rise pushed gasoline prices on Friday to a national average of $3.65 per gallon, the highest ever for this time of year.
