Gas prices on the rise, with $4 a gallon possible by spring

Gas prices could increase from 5 cents to 8 cents within the next week, pinching people in their pocketbooks.

“It’s unfortunate that consumers are having to pay these prices,” said Jessica Brady, a spokeswoman for the southern region of the AAA Auto Club Group. “It starts to eat into disposable income.”

The increase estimate comes from GasBuddy.com, which tracks prices at thousands of gasoline stations across the state.

Gas prices typically rise this time of year, but increases have been aggravated by a number of global and national factors, officials said.

That means people will have less money in their pockets and some agencies might have to tighten their budgets.

Brady declined to project how much gas prices in St. Johns County could rise this week, but she said prices in Florida will probably reach $4 a gallon by spring.

For Northeast Florida the average price per gallon of regular gas is around $3.63 cents.

Brady said tensions in Iran along with problems at oil refineries in the country have contributed to the unusual increase in prices. Refineries have been shutting down — some for lack of profits, others for maintenance issues.

Gas Prices Continue To Climb

CINCINNATI -- Gasoline prices are continuing to climb as spring approaches.

The state's average price for regular gas was $3.45 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's up 12 cents from the average of $3.33 per gallon a week ago.

By Thursday morning, some stations around Cincinnati had gas as high as $3.79, while some were still around $3.30.

Drivers are paying closer attention to the best deals on fuel.

"Usually radio stations or just watching, my parents live in Ohio, so we drive back and forth, so they're 85 years old, so we drive back and forth, so wherever we can get it, we get it," said driver Karen Lucas, of Cold Spring.

Drivers were paying an average of about $3.10 at this time last year, before prices climbed to record highs. Some analysts believe gas prices may hit new highs in the next few months.
