Human 'shock absorber' discovered

SYDNEY: A tiny 'shock absorber' has been discovered in a type of protein found in the human body, Australian researchers have reported.

A study published in a recent issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has investigated tropoelastin - the building block of elastin, which is what gives skin, arteries and lungs their elasticity. Tropoelastin is known for having an odd structure, with a claw-like foot at one end which attaches to cells in the body while a pogo stick-like spring on the other end opens and closes to provide elasticity. For years, scientists have been trying to figure out what the function of the bridge region that connects these two ends is.

Now, a team of researchers have discovered that the bridge in the middle acts like a car's shock absorber, expanding and contracting to minimise the impact on attached cells, and ensuring that the tropoelastin isn't ripped off and detached.

"We found it functions as a shock absorber between the two locations and therefore allows for these two different functions and for the two different regions to be connected one to another," said co-author Tony Weiss from the University of Sydney in New South Wales.

Sunlight Absorber

Communications 2: 517

Results: Thin films of silver ordinarily absorb only 5 percent of visible light. By applying a pattern of nanoscale shapes to such a surface, researchers increased absorption to 70 percent. The patterned film absorbs light from the entire visible spectrum and from almost any angle.

Why it matters: The advance could lead to solar cells that are far thinner and cheaper than conventional ones, because less semiconductor material would be needed to absorb sunlight. Researchers have known that nanoscale patterns can greatly enhance light absorption by gathering light waves the way antennas gather radio waves. But these patterns typically absorb only light of certain wavelengths, allowing most of the solar spectrum to escape. That makes them impractical for use in solar cells. The researchers have demonstrated that their patterns can be used to absorb a wide range of wavelengths, opening the door for their use in photovoltaic devices.

I have a 2008 Malibu 2LT and need a bumper absorber. Why is there no availability?

I took my 2008 Malibu 2LT to the body shop for some minor collision work including a new front bumper absorber. I've been waiting nearly a month and they said that the part (bumper absorber) is on back-order. I tried calling Chevrolet Customer Service and filed a claim to no avail. Any suggestions on how I might get this resolved?

http://www.gmpartsdepartment.com/

try there, thats the GM parts store.
If you have their estimate, it should have the part number which will make the search much faster.
at least you will know if the part is available yet or not and where its at.

It sounds like Chevy isn't making enough spare parts for your car, and you are having to stand in line.

Keep bugging them to get it done, that's about all you can do.

Youre just gonna have to wait. Or try scouring the salvage yards. Your car is too new. Next time be more careful driving.

Have the dealer try putting it on a national locator which ties many dealer parts dept's on a type of search engine across the country for parts....you may get lucky. I've run into that a few times for customers with brand new cars...pretty bad customer service but it's not just GM. Or ask the dealer parts or service manager to see if the GM zone rep can get one pulled from the assembly line and shipped. Some aftermarket suppliers of refurbished or aftermarket bumpers offer absorbers as well....ask the bodyshop if they have tried that route.

where your car is so new - that is very likely, they are still making those cars, never mind the parts for them

we had an H2 that was only a few weeks old, that someone crashed it took over 2 months to get parts for it...

Good luck - and if the shop said the put the order in, it is in, there isnt much more they can do but wait!

Remember it dosent help them any to have your car just sit - you dont pay for your car until it's finished -which means they already bought a bumper ect and have money "out" on your car, they will do whatever they can on your end to get it back - but they can only do so much when it comes to getting the parts!

Sorry to hear - I know hoe much it sucks, I get to deal with the upset customers when this happens!

How much is reasonable to pay to fit a front shock absorber to a BMW 525TD 1995?

How much is reasonable to pay to fit a front shock absorber to a BMW 525TD 1995

I have a new one (paid £50)
One was damaged, the other is fine, so Is fitting one OK, Could I do it myself, or do you need specialist gear?

Re running on SVO it seems to have caused MOT emissions failure.

To fit a new shocker on the front involves releasing the main strut from the brake assembly. It is a garage job really. You would also need a pair of spring compressors to remove the old shocker.

I think £50 for a shock is perfectly reasonable - but you should always have them replaced as a pair on the front or rear, never individually.
Expect to pay another £50 - £150 to have each one fitted - there's a bit of work involved in replacing the front ones.

Don't just do one! Always do the pair otherwise you will have uneven suspension at the front, dodgy effect on steering and braking.

Shop around, ask the quick fit type places over the phone. Some even have 0800 numbers.

BMW 525TD - Runs well on Bio diesel or straight vegetable oil (but you already knew that).

how does a double acting shock absorber work on a car?

Im writing an assignment for motor vehicle and i need to briefly explain how a double acting shock absorber works on a car.

In my vechile My new shock are not good as the other one!

They work on both a down and upstroke of the unit. Like when you hit a pothole it stops the wheel from dropping suddenly, or hit a bump and it slows the upstroke of the axle.

first it reacts as a normal shock, by absorbing and transferring the initail shock, then the secondary shock absorbs and transfers the secondary shock, resulting in negative shock

Can you pull the impact absorber on a cadillac back out?

I nicked a pole while driving and my impact absorber is compressed in and i just need to pull it back out. Is there a way that you can do this without going to a dealership or something like that? There is no damager to the bumper it is just pushed in about 1'. Can anybody help me out with this?

they actually crush in there/pull it out/use come-a-long and telephone pole/piece of chain

Which company is the best for shock absorber?

My car is Van Terra(Turtle Top). My van doesn't drive smoothly on bumpy roads and it wobbles from side to side and I keep changing the suspension and the shock absorber but I keep having the same problem.

Monroe, but you may need to check the suspension and tires for this concern
