The heart of any gas-fired furnace is the heat exchanger. It transfers the heat from the gas burners to the air that circulates through the system. If a heat exchanger develops cracks or holes, replacement of the appliance is imminent. Heat exchangers can crack if they get too hot and expand beyond their design limits. This can actually be caused, over time, by dirty air filters, but it's most often just a condition of old age. Heat exchangers can be vulnerable to rust if there's excessive moisture in the area or the furnace is tied to a central AC and the interior exchanger on the AC has a problem with its condensate pan or drain, resulting in water dripping onto the furnace exchanger.
Symptoms that can indicate a bad heat exchanger include exhaust smell in your living space and soot around heat registers in the house or around the furnace itself. If you see water under your furnace and/or corrosion inside the unit, have the heat exchanger checked for holes. A breach in the heat exchanger allows exhaust gases to mix with the system's circulated air and can result in dangerous levels of carbon monoxide inside the house. If your CO2 detector sounds off during the heating season, have the furnace checked immediately.
County must install new AC unit to keep courthouse servers cool
23.02.12
It might be the middle of the winter in Minnesota, but it’s hotter than “Dutch love” in the room that houses the computer servers at the Houston County Courthouse.
County IT Director Andy Milde and HR Director Tess Arrick Kruger informed the Houston County Board that improvements in the climate control system in the server room needed to be made very soon.
“The compressor on the current AC unit is shot,” Milde began. “It can be fixed, but it’s about 10 years old, must run 24-7 and we don’t know how much longer it will last.”
The massive server computers that connect many of the 200-some county computers produce a tremendous amount of heat. The server room not only needs to remain at a certain temperature, but also at a certain humidity level. Too much humidity is bad for the system and too little humidity causes static electricity.
At the present time cold air from the unheated attic is being vented into the server room. But three humidifiers are needed to maintain the cold, dry air at 40 to 50 percent humidity.

ac compressor?

i juss took out my ac compressor from my 97 toyota tercel and the ac still ice cold....how is it possible and plus is deres gonna b problem if i continue to use it?
Either you didn't remove the AC compressor, or it's still very cold where you are and it only appears that the AC is working. There's NO WAY that the AC can operate without the compressor!
Many vehicles have an AIR pump that is part of the emissions control system. It looks a lot like an AC compressor. Assuming that your AC is actually still working, you removed the AIR pump, not the AC compressor.
Running with emissions systems disabled is illegal in the US as well as most countries with emissions control standards.

Are you sure you removed the AC compressor? There is no way the AC will work with out it. When you disconnect the AC hoses feron will escape under pressure. Did you see any?

If the AC is still cold, you removed something other than the compressor. If it was the air pump, as has been mentioned, it is illegal to drive without it and so doing will foul your catalytic converter (big bucks).

sounds like you removed the air pump.... for your emissions controls... I would put that back on if you can, if not big $$
air conditioning doesn't work without a compressor or freon.

How does the AC Compressor effect the vehicle?
Sep 12, 2007 by dluke68502 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a 1995 Cadillac Deville. My car has a funny sound coming from under the hood. Two mechanics said there was a problem with my AC Compressor. I'm going to get it fixed but I can't do it until after I go out of state about 6 hours away. Will it be okay to drive that far with this problem? Does it effect how the vehicle runs or does it have to deal directly with the Air Conditioner running or not? My AC still works but it just sounds funny under the hood.
Unplug the clutch on the compressor. Simply remove the 2 wires right behind the clutch, should say disconnect and tape to one of the A/C hoses so the wire does't get lose or burn on the exhaust manifold.

If you can drive with the AC off, that would probably be better, as the compressor will not be running the system.
The worst that I can think of is you might break a belt, so you may want to get a spare before you go, and have someone show you how to put it on.
sdenison1983 | Sep 12, 2007
Yeah, the compressor bearing is probably bad and that is making the noise.... you should be ok to drive for a short distance, but I wouldn't drive for a long time, get it fixed fast.

How hard is it to replace the AC compressor in a 2001 Dodge Caravan?
Jun 09, 2008 by David M | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm an experienced "shadetree mechanic," but I haven't done much work with AC systems. Dealer tells me my Caravan (3.3 liter, dual zone climate control), needs a new compressor, but of course he wants to charge me an arm and a leg. How difficult would it be for me to replace the compressor myself?
Its not super hard to get to the compressor itself. If the old compressor blew up there is more to it than just the compressor to replace. You need to replace the accumulator, expansion valve, flush the system as old compressor put debris in the system. Then there are orings to replace, oil to add and evacuate and recharge with the proper amount of freon. The $1000. range is not out of line for this job. The more time you spend now doing this will make sure you don't do it twice ................UJN

How can you tell if your AC compressor is bad?
Jul 14, 2008 by ricardo m | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a 96 mazda protege. The serpintine belt burnt out and it works in conjuction for the powersteering and AC compressor. Well my powersteering dosent work now and when i tried to put on a new belt the compressor wont move now. Does this mean the compressor is bad?
The a/c compressor normally has a magnetic clutch to engage and disengage it. It should turn freely with the belt off and have virtually no resistance while you spin it.Even with the clutch engaged, you can normaly turn the compressor by hand, it may be hard to turn but it should not be so hard that you cannot turn it even slightly. If it will not move then the compressor clutch has failed and likely the compressor is damaged too. A replacement may be the only solution, along with an A/C service and recharge. If you replace the compressor, you will be able to install the belt and it can be run w/o recharging the a/c, or course you will not have a/c until you have the system recharged.
