Wapda's employee comes up with a fuel-free generator, the 'Alternator'
23.05.12
Syed Anwar Ali, a stenographer in Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), created the design, for what he likes to call an “alternator” – a 50 kilowatt power generating machine. According to Ali, the whole setup will cost around Rs2.5 million but will be extremely cheap to maintain. Usually, generators which produce this much power consume around four litres of diesel per hour. With the cost of diesel running as high as almost Rs99 per litre, running the generator for an hour alone can cost about Rs400. On the other hand the alternator’s monthly cost of maintenance will only be around Rs1,000, Ali said, apart from the salary given to the staff hired for operating it. According to its creator, the alternator will work continuously for seven to 10 days and then require a break of two to three hours for maintenance and oiling. “It is designed for commercial and industrial use.” Ali refused to tell more about the design of his prototype, except that about four tons of iron will be required for ball bearings, shafts and two flying wheels of the alternator. Two iron flying wheels, each weighing a ton will be fitted on the side of the machine and will revolve like a Ferris wheel to produce power. However Ali refused to provide the specifications for fear that his design might be plagiarised.

Aftermarket ultra bright lights work, don't void warranty

Aftermarket ultra bright lights work, don't void warranty Tuesday January 17, 2012 1:08 PM
By Junior Damato Photo credit: Wieck/Ford Dear Doctor: My daughter bought a used 2010 Ford Fusion SE. She complains that her low beam headlights don't seem as bright as her sister's 2009 Ford Fusion SLE. When we compared the headlights on these two vehicles we found that the 2009 has a silver reflective area around the low-beam bulb. On the 2010, it looks like the bulb is behind a frosted area. Can we get a brighter low-beam bulb for the 2010 that won't be too hot for the wiring and/or negate the warranty? Is it possible that the low beam on the 2010 can be adjusted higher to compensate for this? Jean Dear Jean: We replace a lot of headlight bulbs on a variety of vehicles. We use the Silver Star brand of ultra bright lights. These bulbs do make a big difference and will not void the warranty and/or cause any wiring issues. As for adjusting the light height, you need to use a headlight board or wall with the vehicle on a level surface and follow the manufacturer's height adjustment. I think the brighter bulb replacement will make your daughter happy.

Alternator?

Whats the factory amps on an alternator? Im looking at new ones from Autozone and they only say 105amp. Is that enough to be consider a high output alternator? (97 grand prix)
Any recommendations on where i can purchase a high output alternator?
a standard alternator is 70/75 amps.you'll be fine
harrypm82 | Feb 01, 2008
Chances are that is EOM specifications. Putting more amps into you system could burn up a lot of batteries. good luck
jack w | Feb 01, 2008
I wouldnt consider 105amps to be high output. I believe most stock alternators run in the 80-100 ish amp range. for a high output alternator I would personally go to an autozone and ask them about it, but Im not sure if autozone would be the ideal location for a high output alternator. do a google search or yahoo search for high output alternator and you will be directed to various sites where you can find an alternator that works for you

A 105 ampere alternator will power 1000 watts RMS safely.
Anything higher than 800 RMS total and electrical upgrade are recommended:
1. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery
2. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.

i have a OEM "heavy duty" alternator rated at 105 amps. I would not call it a HO alternator, but it is on the bigger side of OEM. As sparky said 1000 watts would work fine on that. for more you would need a HO alternator that typcially rage from 150-300amps... you could also look for a alternator rebuild shop often time they can rebuild the stock alternator for around 20% increase.
To buy a new alternaotor i have heard good things about Ohio generator.
But honestly @ 1000 watts, its more volume than is typically needed. i mean i am running 800 and i can turn it up to the point of hurting my ears. so why go louder, unless your going to compete. and then you'll need to know alot more than simply where to get a HO altenator.
Something to think about if you double power you only gain 3db of volume, and th esame goes for doubleing cone surface area. soo.
a system with a single sub at 1000 watts is going to sound just as loud as having two of those subs with only 500 watts. Also keep in mind some subs are way more effiecient than others, a 6db difference is not uncommon, so look for a effiecient sub, use multiples and with a mere 1000 watts you could make your brain rattle.
UPDATE:
Dan H. -
when i mention wattage ratings assume i am refering to RMS on a cea-2006 amp.... which is real wattage. with amps such as boss, you could go several thousand watts, because they are not real watts.
Rick G | Feb 01, 2008
It is just the OE alternator, rebuilt. If their is nothing wrong with your alternator, do not replace it with Autozone junk, unless you want to put another one in a couple weeks.
Larry B | Feb 01, 2008
No offence to Rick or anyone else, but I'm running two 1300 watt Sony Xplods through a 1000 watt Boss amp...with a 2 farad Scosche capacitor and found this post because I'm trying to upgrade to subs and an amp 5 times more power full because i don't think that I'll be satisfied until i have them.

alternator?
Sep 02, 2006 by vidafut_69 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
any special routine i have to follow when i change the alternator
disconnect the battery
hekler1873 | Sep 02, 2006
Not really.
Just make sure your replacement is the right one and that you reconnect all of the wires the same way you disconnected them from the old one.
Hope this helps.
Have fun but be safe.

How to remove the alternator in a 2002 Pontiac Montana?
Jan 03, 2008 by JoeCool | Posted in Pontiac
Hi,
This question is for someone who has actually replaced the alternator in a Pontiac Montana (hopefully 2002). I have replaced alternators on other cars, but the space on this seems too tight to pull the alternator out. What has to be removed to remove / replace the alternator? It looks like maybe some of the windshield wiper control arms, but even that doesn't look like it will open up enough space. This van does not have a cover inside the van to remove for engine access.
Remove the front engine torque mounts (dog bones). Put the car into neutral and attach a strap to the engine lift hook and the other end around the radiator support bar. Pull on the strap so that the engine moves toward the front of the car until you have enough room to remove the alternator and then secure this position.

I have never done one on this type of have but a there's a good chance going theough the wheel well is going to be the easiest way.
loonatic72 | Jan 03, 2008
I know, this is real hard to get to. I have a Chevy venture with a similar situation.
Looks like to me, on mine at least, that you have to take, the plastic piece , that covers the wiper stuff off.
Your best bet would be to go buy a Chilton's book on it. Sometimes you can ask the person at the auto parts store, they are very knowledgeable.
Also they might have instructions with the new altenator.
Good luck
NATHANIEL G | Jan 03, 2008
Go to Murrays, autozone, pep boys and get a Chiltons repair manual for this model and year.....Chilton will walk you right through replacing the alternator with very good diagrams.....
Still stuck, take it to a mechanic....should be about $250 total...of course you will get a rebuilt alternator, but make sure there is a warranty on parrts.

Alternator is not charging, but the alternator is fine and battery is ok?
Nov 07, 2007 by Wayne M | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a 1979 Datsun pick up and it was working fine. Suddenly the alternator was not charging. I replaced the battery, and checked the alternator. The alternator was fine. Then I noticed my brake lite was on, and stay on when the battery is connecting. I think I have a short, but don't know where to look.
If you have a short, and are not blowing fuses, you would have melting wires.
Does the engine remain running if you disconnect the battery? If so, then your alternator is working, and is connected properly.
Does the battery not take a charge at all when the car is running? Will the battery deplete itself while the car is running? If so, then perhaps there is a bad connection to the alternator.
Does the battery charge only to deplete overnight? The perhaps there is something draining the battery.
A volt meter and an Ammeter (with shunt) are the tools that can help you diagnose this problem. The Ammeter can tell if the battery is charging or discharging while the engine is running, and to what amount.

How do you remove a alternator from a honda CBX 750 motorbike?
May 24, 2008 by Dutch | Posted in Motorcycles
Hi, I suspect alternator failure on my Honda CBX 750. Ive tried to remove it but no joy so far. I've read it's chain driven, does that mean the engine needs to be stripped to remove the alternator? The battery is not charging and there is no voltage on the primary alternator wires. Thanks for your help.
