Signal baseball prepares for season of growth
Bumper Reese sat on the concrete bleachers overlooking the Signal Mountain baseball field Saturday evening. In front of him was a field overhauled with a new dirt infield and more than 20 new drains inserted to resolve last season’s flooding issues.
Behind him, the frame of a brick concession area stood, blocked off by the orange fencing and gravel foundation of a full-fledged construction site.
Reese was just coming off the field after his Eagles’ second game of the day. Signal fell 13-2 to Red Bank in the early game of the Wildcat Classic, then rebounded to win 8-1 against Sale Creek for its first victory of the season.
“It’s going to take us a while to have it where we want it, but we’re working on it,” the second-year head coach said.
The statement could just as easily apply to the team he’s putting on the field as the program and facilities to which he was actually referring.
After 18 seasons as an assistant and head baseball coach at his alma mater, Red Bank, Reese took over the head-coaching position at Signal Mountain in the summer of 2010. Without a senior on the roster, the Eagles bounced through an up and down year to an 18-18 record in 2011.

Imagine you are driving along and the car in front of you stops suddenly. Luckily, you slam on your brakes and come within inches of his bumper, but the car behind you is not so fortunate. It hits you and pushes you into the first car.
Unfortunately, even though the courts decide you are only 5% liable because you were following too closely, you end up paying for the entire accident, because the car behind you doesn't have the money. That's Rhode Island’s current approach to personal injury and property damage. It drives up insurance costs on all Rhode Islanders, individuals and businesses alike, by holding all potential defendants jointly and severally liable.
Under Rhode Island’s current liability system, a party who may only be responsible for causing 1% of the damage could be forced to pay for 100% of the costs to make the injured party whole. A bill that would correct this unfair practice is scheduled to be heard in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the Rise of the House in the House Lounge.
