KYB struts?
Dec 04, 2007 by thunderbirdcoupe89 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I got new KYB GR2 struts for my 89 thunderbird. After removing the old OE struts, i found that the old ones were much firmer than the KYB's. The old ones are harder to push down, and come back quicker. Is this a bad thing? did i get ripped off?
They should move slowly back and fourth otherwise they are bad. I bought KYB struts and they are fine.

It should be hard to move both ways. If it moves easy one way, it's worn out.

wow a 89 thunderchicken that had stock shocks that are not worn slap out????
I have the KYB gr-2 on 2 of my rides and they work ok,i wouldn't worry about it.

My KYB struts make knocking noise when hitting small bumps?
Feb 10, 2008 by Fung H | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
In November 2007, I lowered my 1989 Ford Probe with KYB struts and Eibach springs with new strut mounts. The suspension now makes knocking noise whenever going over small bumps; the noise occurs vitually at all speeds. I contacted KYB, and they suggested to tighten the suspension to the specified torque. The garage again checked the installation and found everything is torqued correctly. The ride also stiffens when the temperature drops below 32 F. The noise is very annoying; any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.
I lowered my Mustang with lowering springs and I found out if you leave out the spring isolators that will lower the car another 1/4 inch or so and look cool but it will make the same kind of noises you are getting. Are your isolators in place? sometimes they bounce out or shift or they just wear out. A loose strut mount can also make that type of noise too.

probably going to happen in cold weather, ot the struts are bottoming out. when you change oem equipment, some other problem always shows up.

You should have purchased Monroe Sensi-tracs. They handle large and small bumps and corner great. Now you have a low riding Probe that drives like a truck.
If they are noisy, you will be told you left something out when re-assembling them, or that the upper mounts are bad.
Just think what a nice comfortable ride you'll have with those 18" rims and tires with no sidewall. A horse is more comfortable ride. Good Luck.

That's a pretty good sign you should have someone check the following: Sway bar end links, lower ball joints and inner and outer tie-rod ends. Make sure your disc brake caliper brackets are tight as well as the calipers.
Too bad about your rough ride. Lowering springs have a much higher spring rate than the originals. Spring rate is measured in pounds of resistance per inch of travel at their installed height. I'll bet Eibach didn't tell you this. It's necessary to keep your frame and oil pan off the ground.
To be absolutely sure the struts aren't bottoming out, measure the uppermost lip of the fender and get the heaviest of your buddies to stand on the lip of the body that stretches between the fenders (in front of the radiator.) Have them bounce up and down to determine if you feel the struts bottoming out or you hear the noise. If you can't pinpoint the sound. Pull the wheels off and put jack stands as close to the lower ball joints you can and repeat the above test.
One person should lay their hands on the lower ball joints, sway bar links and stick a long handled screwdriver between the coil springs and rest the end on the strut. Put an ear on the end of the plastic screwdriver and listen for noise.
Incidentally Monroe sensa-tracks with the famous juice slot in the inside of the strut barrel are far too light in the valving dept. to control the fast oscillations of a very high rate coil spring. If Monroe knew HALF of what KYB forgot they'd improve immencely.

Can I use my OEM springs with my KYB struts?
May 01, 2009 by sillygrl_17 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I had/have Eibachs on there, but they have been making noise. It's recommended that I just put my oem springs back on - can I do this?
