AutoNation: Back in the fast lane
11.07.11
Following strong sales and profit growth in 2010, Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation, the countrys largest automotive retailer, was expecting more of the same this year, despite the slow pace of economic recovery. But after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Japan March 11, Japanese auto and component manufacturers stopped or steeply reduced output, causing shortages of vehicles for AutoNation and the rest of the retail automotive sector worldwide. At the same time, the average price of regular gasoline spiraled up to nearly $4 a gallon before easing back in May. AutoNation, which depends on Japan for an important share of its vehicle mix, ran out of many Japanese models and saw its new vehicle sales fall by 15 percent in May compared to the previous year. After shortages reached a high point, May sales of imports from Japan plummeted 30 percent. In contrast, the company had registered new vehicle sales increases ranging from 11 percent to 29 percent in previous months.

Wouldn't GM completely dominate car sales if it released an updated version of its 1964 line?
Jul 12, 2010 by Bay | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
How'd you like a 2011 Impala? Sound decent? Well how about a 2011 Impala SS that looks EXACTLY like the 1964 Impala with a new-car drivetrain and updated safety equipment all the while keeping the original style in every way. All leather, chrome, and steel, no plastic. If GM released its 1964 Line up it would completely dominate the domestic and international market. No modern aeroturd would stand a chance.
They'd completely destroy all modern cars in sales. No one would buy those shitty aeroturds if they had the option to buy an ORIGINAL car. Give the old cars modern features and people would be able to win back their individuality.
It's a real fine idea, and yes, sales would pick up a LOT. However, it can't be done. The car would be too heavy to meet the C.A.F.E. standards, the bumpers couldn't meet current safety standards, etc etc
Don't think for a minute that you're the first person to think of this. I've seen this idea put forth MANY times in the past.
Auto makers are FORCED to use a lot of plastics and other light weight materials in order for today's cars to get better fuel economy.
The Government is also trying to INCREASE the corporate average fuel economy requirements even HIGHER, so a lot of today's larger cars will either be disappearing soon, or be made ALL plastic I suspect.

Now days with the new safety standards enforced by law, it is not possible for them to re-continue production of their late model cars. This is why the newer Camaro, Charger, and Challenger do not look anything like they did.
To actually answer your question, YES!! i would sell my truck, car and my brothers car to get a '64 Impala SS and im sure others feel the same (except for those snobby Europeans that think American cars are inferior to whale shit)

why are the cheaper / economical cars so ugly? can't the makers just make the car look like an exotic car?
Mar 16, 2009 by Nelson S | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
why doesn't the automobile industry make some of their cheaper cars that are soooo ugly look like "sick" exotic sports cars. you can still have the same cheap motor under the hood and cheap options, but just make the body of the car look awesome. For example why doesn't ford make their focus look like a bmw, or masserati? has studies shown that if they did make normal cars look like exotic cars, sales will do down or something of that nature? Is it the car designers that are making these ugly cars because i look at some domestic cars out there that i'm sure i could have design a better looking car. i'm speaking in particular about the american automobile industry, most american cars these days look soo ugly compared to ALL the european and japanese cars.
Part of making a car economical is making it lighter...the size of the passenger compartment can't be shrunk much...that's why econo-boxes look so..."boxy".
Those small diameter wheels and skinny tires are out of proportion, relative to the passenger compartment too, at least compared to the more stylish cars. They sort of just band aid some wheels, fenders, trunk and engine compartment onto the cabin.
In my opinion, form follows function. So it seems to me an economy car looks exactly like it should...
Another thing to consider is the car manufacturers want you to PAY for stylishness...that's why the cool cars look so much nicer than the grocery getters. They are in business to make money, after all...

Good point and excellent observation. You should work in Detroit. I can't even get into a compact "efficient" car these days.
I think they are just trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. Any "flourishes" cost more.

Actually the newer model Nissans look really good and the Sentra is great on gas, just make sure its an 07 or later.
Geo-Star | Mar 16, 2009
I've been thinking the same thing myself actually. i'd be much more likely to buy a car that does 50 to the gallon if it looked like a ferrari 250 GTO than a shoebox like they do. car manufacturers take note stop making your eco freindly cars look like rubbish. I don't want to drive something that looks like a shoebox with 4 wheels attached to it

US auto makers sales figures vs foreign auto maker sales figures?
Jun 29, 2009 by squallyz06 | Posted in Buying & Selling
Having trouble finding these numbers. I would like to know the total vehicles sold per year for various car companies both domestic and imports. Any links to a website with such statistics would be great. Oh and the farther it goes back the better.
I don't know about cars per year but the Autoblog http://www.autoblog.com/ posts sales figures monthly for every car brand sold in America. The report shows current month vs same month last year.
The column is called "By The Numbers". You should be able to do a search for old data.

What is a good car for a salesperson to have? A good blend between gas mileage, comfortable and looks good?
May 25, 2007 by thebuffettour | Posted in Commuting
I am starting a job as a sales person who will be driving around probably 4 days a week. I get an allowance for gas but mileage over a certain distance from home. I imagine I will be taking the occassional customer out to lunch but will more likely just have a co-worker here or there.
My area will be Michigan but I will be selling machines made by a Japanese company so I am not sure about domestic vs. foreign?
I would like something between 20,000 & 30,000
whatever you get, make it big and expensive to show your clients who's the man, YOU. YOU make the money, YOU are the salesman of the year, YOU get all the women and YOU are jealous of no one.
If you can't afford that get a purple 1994 Honda Civic with a wing on the back of it.

For those of you who drive foreign cars......?
Dec 22, 2008 by lisa m | Posted in Other - Car Makes
Has anyone made a rude comment to you personally about your choice of owning a foreign vehicle now that the US is struggling with its car sales? How do you handle it?
It may seem like a silly question... but today at work I was chatting with a customer (I work at a credit union) and this guy is telling me about the loan he just got through us for his new Toyota Camry. I mentioned that I drive a Honda Accord and I've also owned a Civic and a Toyota Corolla. The guy and I were casually talking about how satisfied we are with the hondas and toyotas we've owned and how we couldn't imagine driving anything else. Then this other customer who had been listening starts chewing us out about how we're "the reason that the US auto industry is in trouble.... and we should be ashamed that we've caused so many families to be in their current situation." I just thought that was rude... I mean... many "foreign" cars are built right here in the US... while many domestic makes are made in other countries and then are sold here as USA made. It just doesn't make sense... and I'm sorry if I offend anyone here... but I just adore my Honda!! I wouldn't trade it for the world (unless it was on a new one!)
When I get a comment about not driving an American car, I laugh, because my 8 year old BMW M5, can whip the sh*t out of any 8 year old american "muscle car". I also get good MPG, have a full leather interior, heated memory seats, 4 doors, all power option (working), and a comfortable ride. Can the same be said for half the american cars in today's market? NO.
It isn't our fault the american car makers have put the same POS cars on the market every year. We buy foreign because we want quality.
