Cars seized after racing at 170kph
Two drivers face charges of reckless driving and racing after allegedly being clocked travelling at more than 160 kilometres in Canberra.
Two cars travelling side by side were caught in a laser speed check in an 80 kilometre per hour zone on Belconnen Way at Aranda on Tuesday afternoon.
One of the cars was detected travelling at 170kph while the other was detected at 165kph.
Police seized the cars after stopping them on Caswell Drive in Aranda.
The 31-year-old and 34-year-old drivers will face court charged with furious, reckless, dangerous driving and organising, promoting and taking part in a race.
Sergeant Rod Anderson from Traffic Operations says the drivers' behaviour is disturbing.
He says they clearly did not think about their personal safety or the safety of others on the road.
"This type of behaviour is reckless and highly dangerous. With the speed the vehicles were travelling at, the chances of a fatal collision occurring are high," he said.
Georgia police upgrading cars and gear with increasingly lucrative seizures of ...
ATLANTA — Police departments and law enforcement agencies across Georgia are increasingly using seized cash and property to upgrade their vehicle fleets, weapons and other equipment.
Seizures and the payouts from them have been growing, especially in Georgia, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported ( http://bit.ly/a1eK ).
Georgia law enforcement agencies last year got nearly $30 million, up from $28.6 million in 2010 and $25 million in 2009.
The growth partly reflects an expansion of federal laws allowing seizure of cash or property -- called asset forfeiture -- used in the commission of crime s or acquired with ill-gotten gains.
The total amount of asset forfeitures in Georgia last year was $56 million, putting the state behind only New York, California, Florida and Texas.
Some people have concerns the practice puts too much emphasis on profit and could lead authorities to seize property from people who aren't even convicted or charged.
