There are a bunch of auctions. Bank repos, government auctions, police auctions, and private auctions.

Have you gone to a CarMax auction? If you have a CarMax dealer in the area ask them when they auction off the cars they buy.

get him a something that will work for both of you, yet he'll be able to have a little fun with. try researching some cars at edmunds.com - car reviews - model reviews.
try looking at a mazda protege 01 or 02 (make sure it is a 2.0 liter)
or maybe a toyota corolla in older years. (they will last forever and ever)
