10 Cheapest Cars for 2012
24.05.12
Chevrolet Sonic had come to market in time for KBB to compile sufficient data. The cars are marketed largely for young people and, with most of them, "for anyone with pets or kids, it's tough to cram in," KBB analyst Alec Gutierrez says. They are generally intended "for a young adult or any adult who is not looking for sporty or roomy." The offset is that the cars cost little to buy, operate and maintain. "With fuel prices as big a concern as they are today, and with so much talk about fuel efficient vehicles, we wanted to make sure we captured everything that goes into owning a car for five years," Gutierrez says. "For commuters, these are all fantastic options." KBB surveyed the five-year total cost of ownership. It considered fair purchase price, relying on actual transactions from around the country, and then factor in fuel and other factors. For maintenance, it used assumptions based on the cost of recommended scheduled maintenance. For repairs, it assumed the cost of a third-party

The Better Place Model for Electric Vehicles
24.05.12
Battery Cost and Range Anxiety Last week, when I was in Denmark, I visited the Better Place showroom just outside of Copenhagen. Better Place is a new company founded in 2007 to provide customers with the opportunity to drive clean electric vehicles. Founder Shai Agassi identified that the combination of oil dependence and climate-inducing emissions were fatal flaws in our transportation system, and that the traditional auto companies could not solve these problems. Better Place is the result of this project. It is an ambitious effort to not just make an electric car — companies like Chevrolet, Nissan, and Renault are already doing that around the world — but to interlink the electric vehicle into a new, emissions free transport and energy system. The concept is as follows: A customer walks into a showroom and purchases a car (today, only Renault Fluences are available, but more are coming). He then will sign a contract with Better Place for however many miles he drives per year, and Better Place will provide him with a battery and all the electricity he needs for that. Unlike cars such as the Chevrolet Volt or the Nissan Leaf, the initial purchase price of the car is less because the cost does not include the battery. The model is much like when you buy a mobile phone; you buy the phone from Apple or Nokia and then sign up for a service contract from AT&T or Verizon.

What are the safest (but cheapest) cars to buy now and days?
Jul 05, 2008 by StarrLove | Posted in Buying & Selling
I'm looking for something that's 10K or less, but if push comes to shove, I'd be willing to fork over 15K. I don't know much about cars and what has better gas mileage however so I want the cheapest that has the most gas mileage.
2004 Saab 9-5 Aero can be found for $15,000. It is very fast and the safest sedan on the road (fact, not just opinion).
You won't find a new body style Civic from years past for even $15,000 because they've started to appreciate in value. A new one could be haggled down to about $16,000, maybe $15,000 if you get the base model coupe.

The Toyota Yaris is a pretty cheap car that costs about 11K and has great gas milage. You'd have to check on the safety ratings but I'm sure it's pretty safe.

Probably the absolute best car(s) for the money that are used, and reliable with good gas mileage, are Honda's, and Toyota's, and respectfully Lexus and Accord. So, if you find one of these in your price range, you can easily go to consumerreports.org, and research the exact car and find out what you're looking for

Honda Civics are the best cars in the world. And relatively reasonable. Nissan Sentras are pretty good cars too. They are cheap, yet smaller, however very gas efficient and very reliable. So i would go with the civic or the sentra, honestly.

The Nissan Versa is the safest and cheapest choice. It has the highest all around crash safety ratings in its class from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, better than Fit and Yaris. The price is around $12k to $16k, and it has a midsize interior with great fuel efficiency.

pretty much every car manufacture that's available in the U.S.A. has a cheap model now. Chevy has the aveo, Nissan a versa, Toyota a yaris, honda a fit. dodge and ford have little more expensive entry cars with the neon and the focus. the Chevy, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda are all around the 10k mark but they are a brand new car with warranty.

Ladas are cheap to insure. They don't do much damage when they hit another vehicle and they are cheap to replace.
ROBERT D | Jun 01, 2008
whaaaaa are they allowed to drive at 16! you need to have a provisional licence, you can apply for at 17.
The cheapest cars would be the ones with the smallest engines like a 998cc....
Fiesta, or Fiat punto something like that.
+Night+Nurse+ | Jun 01, 2008
That depends on a couple of things. If the car is newer and financed, your insurance will be more expensive than if the car is bought outright. For example. When I was 17 (i am only 21 now) i owned a mustang gt sports car. i bought it outright though and its insurance was 97 a month. A couple years later i owned a pickup truck that was financed my insurance was 290 a month. Right now i own a brand new financed pickup that the insurance is 150 a month on but it is under my parents name. There are tons of factors that are different. but for a more direct answer, a vehicle that is 4 door is usually a little cheaper insurance wise. also vehicles with higher safety ratings. and if they have theft systems installed those are all generally cheaper than say a sports car or a big SUV
nissan altimas
honda civics
volkswagon jettas
ford focus
these are generally cheaper insurance wise.

hi
opel vectra is very cheap in terms of as a second hand car,and in terms of spare parts. you can get one for (nice one) £600 max. it is in insurance group 6, which is not to bad. get 1.6 LS. it is the bottom of the range but it really is very good and practical car.
Koko G | Jun 02, 2008
You arent allowed to drive until you are 17
scuppo | Jun 02, 2008
There is no particular car specified.
But Do NOT buy the old model Vauxhall Corsa, they are rubbish. Try looking at a Volkswagen Fox, Polo, or Golf.
Gemini_DJ | Jun 03, 2008
why dont you wait untill you have passed a test then se what insurance costs

What are the cheapest cars to fix?
Jan 10, 2009 by James B | Posted in Other - Cars & Transportation
I have a ford escort, it's needed a few repairs, and they've always been cheap. I don't have much money, so have to buy old cars and therefore have to bear in mind cost of repairs.
I'd like to change cars, what tends to be cheap to repair? I have heard for example that VWs tend to be expensive, are other makes ok?
As a general rule:
Cheap to repair: Basic ford and vauxhall
Medium: French and Japanese
Expensive: German
of course there are exceptions.
Go for a Fiesta if you want something cheap and simple to fix, go for a VW if you dont want to have the spanners out too often.
