1912 Oldsmobile fetches $3.3 million, sets record at auction
24.05.12
A 1912 Oldsmobile —believed to be the only one of its kind still in existence—fetched $3.3 million last weekend, spurring total sales of $38.3 million at an auction in Florida.
The vintage car, an Olds Limited five-passenger touring, is thought to be one-of-a-kind, as none of its now century-old contemporaries are known to have survived in that trim. It wears chassis No. 64626 and has won a class award at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance .
The price sets a record for an Oldsmobile sold at an auction and roughly doubled the original estimates of $1.4 million to $1.6 million. Underscoring its rarity, the car has one-off coachwork.
The Olds ended up being the show stealer at the sale in Boca Raton, Fla., which was run by RM Auctions and Sotheby's. More than the usual stable of vintage cars, the event featured the sell-off of the private collection of Bob and Paul Milhous, and it included a wide array of musical instruments, clocks, firearms and an airplane. Case in point: The second-highest-selling item was a 1903 Ruth Style 38-B fair organ , a massive instrument that scored $1.265 million.
Open auction attendance doubles in the last 12 months
24.05.12
THE number of franchised dealers attending Manheim’s open auctions has doubled in the past 12 months.
The auction firm says franchised dealers are attending open auctions in their droves in an effort to source used cars for their customers.
However, dealers are having to adjust their normal ‘age’ and ‘mileage policies’ to justify attending auctions just to source stock.
Mike Pilkington, managing director, Manheim Remarketing said: ‘The increase in the numbers of franchised dealers attending Manheim’s open auctions has been evident since the beginning of 2010, but last year saw a significant jump in attendees.
‘It seems that franchised dealers may have realigned their age/mileage policies to justify attending open auctions in such numbers in an attempt to source stock to meet increased demand for used cars.
‘If the numbers of franchised dealers attending open auctions continues to grow at this rate then independent dealers will find they are facing more competition in the auction hall and online.’

Does anyone know of any police car auctions/auctions in Los Angeles?
Apr 06, 2007 by Sports Guy 786 | Posted in Buying & Selling
My car broke down last week and I need/have to get something in a hurry, I heard police car auctions were something I should look into.
Also, If you have any tips on what I should look for and how to possible get the best deal. If you know of any other auctions that would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
I was in a similar situation and I did some research trying to find seized cars. It turned out that I actually was able to buy a car from the Department of Energy. There are a ton a federal auctions all over the country. According to federalgovernmentsales.com, there are over 15 different government departments that have auctions regularly.
I hope this helps.

sometimes they are a good deal, you never really know the full condition of the car till after you bought it though, so it has to be a risk your willing to take. I'm also in the LA area but I don't know where they hold the auctions, try asking your local towin yard.

If you need a car fast buy a police car from the police department in San Pedro there usually around 1200 and have from 60,00 to 100,00 miles on then, I have a friend who have bought them and has had good luck with them. Auction car are not good unless your a mechanic because you can't road test them, you might get a good one or you might get one needing a transmission or something else,Its a chance to take. Good Luck and GOD Bless

Yea, somewhere near Pier 51 where all the impounded cars are stored. If they are not picked up within a certain amount of time the cars are auctioned off.

Try calling the police department to see when their next auction is. You can also use one of those car auction sites if you want more than just one auction location.

ok so i need a car im 16 and i only have like 3,800 but i want a decent car and i have heard that at police auctions and impound lots the cars can be extremely cheap like a nice bmw for 1,000 is this true? where are these auction held or where are these impound lots at? preferably something within the san fernando valley but any info u have within southern california is very appreciated
This is true. It is in every state that cops steal cars.
I think you could Google "impound lots in california" and find something.

Almost every city, county, and state (and federal law enforcement agencies) have seized-property auctions regularly. They are usually announced, by law, in a local newspaper once a month, or once a quarter. You would have to find out which paper and on what schedule. Here's more about it:

Police Car Auctions in Orange County or LA County?
May 21, 2008 by maniax342002 | Posted in Buying & Selling
Hi guys,
where can i get more information about bidding on cars that police auction off? Plus any suggestions of the positives and negatives when doing this?
thanks
Police auctions do not require dealers permit as they are open and announced in local paper before. It is Buyer beware at these. At regular auctions you get to inspect, drive and have carfax to make descion. You will have to check your state for their requirements for permit to be a dealer. Here in Fl. itis 300.00 a year and is a state permit therefore no felonies on record.. I do not know what initial cost is. i wish everyone could go just to see that we pay what we do for used cars and why the KBB or black book prices car as they do. It is an average auction price. All cars are in fair condition as they will all need service and pass state inspections and safety laws. No car is exempt so all will need work to get to good condition which is when it can be sold at Dealer. I am talking about honest Dealers not the few who give rest bad name like any Buchanon enterprise store. You know the congressman who bought his way in as he lost on votes and18000 votes between him and opponent were lost. in county where he is from where he got 22% of votes only and rest came up missing.
