Corn, soybean stubble can pose thorny problem for tires, tracks
Stubble from corn hybrids and soybean varieties designed to withstand wind damage or disease and insert pressure can be a thorn in the side of farm tires.
Stronger stalks and stubble can cause sidewall cuts and punctures of large tractor tires.
The problems stubble can cause to tires have industry experts recommending stubble lengths and other suggestions.
Paul Jasa, University of Nebraska ag engineer, suggests farmers leave stalks taller than 1 foot after harvest, perhaps 18 to 24 inches. He and other tire industry experts also recommend using stubble shoes or other devices on combine heads or in front of tractors to knock stubble over before it comes in contact with tires.
A couple Midwest companies market tools to take down stubble and save tire wear.
