AAA Expects 8.7 Million Stranded Motorists During Summer Travel Season
24.05.11
, AAA Director of Auto Repair, Buying Services and Consumer Information. "However, there are three easy maintenance tasks any driver can perform to reduce their chances of becoming stranded, improve the safety of their road trip and even save a little money."
The three maintenance tasks AAA recommends all motorists to perform before hitting the road for a summer road trip include:
1. Inspect All FIVE Tires
Many motorists may be confused when told to check five tires, however AAA has found one of the most frequently overlooked items on a vehicle is the spare tire. When inspecting tires, it's important also to make sure the spare is in good condition and ready for use in case it's needed.
"Roughly 1.2 million drivers will call AAA for help with a flat tire during the summer travel season, and many of those problems could be avoided by inspecting the tires before hitting the road," said Nielsen. "Tire inspections are simple to perform. The only tools needed are a quarter and a tire pressure gauge."

Pre-Trip Vehicle Checks Make for Safer, Gas-Saving Summer Road Trips
23.05.11
A gallon, making sure your vehicle is running efficiently will get you more miles to the gallon."
The pre-trip vehicle check recommended by the Car Care Council includes:
Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. Check the hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle's fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need

just moved in US where do i get air for tires?
Jun 27, 2006 by bitter and twisted | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
the gas station i go to for gas doesn't have one, does other station provide free air?
Good question!
Most gasoline retailers do NOT have compressed air from what I've seen -- and I drive all over the country! For this reason, I bought a portable compressor and carry it in my trunk.

some have free air..other's don't. costs up to like $3 for all the tires, depending how low they are
Ryan | Jun 27, 2006
Other gas stations probably will have it. as far as free, some do some don't.
Adidas_031 | Jun 27, 2006
Look at others....Sears is a good place too, they will fill you for free.
Brian | Jun 27, 2006
Any Gas Station should have it
Clayton B | Jun 27, 2006
Try another gas station. Where I live, almost every station has a place to pump air. If you still can't find one, try an auto repair shop.
kelsey_black89 | Jun 27, 2006
most gas stations have air, if your doesn't just try another one. They usually charge $0.50, but sometimes you can go in and just ask the guy to turn it on for free.
kidd_91 | Jun 27, 2006
Try another one. Most gas stations have air.

thelooneylife | Jun 27, 2006

naj | Jun 27, 2006
Most do...but try any tire store
angels | Jun 27, 2006
try buying a foot pump, inflates your tyres and gives you some exercise at the same time two for the price of one
pikewingers | Jun 27, 2006
Most gas stations that provide air will bypass the $.50-$.75 fee if you buy gas there.
Max B | Jun 27, 2006
some do
davidreed1973 | Jun 27, 2006
you have to go to a partshouse and buy a small air compressor they are not very much and it saves you from going to gas stations looking for air
you can also get them at walmart and sears, just about anywhere
luke | Jun 27, 2006
you can buy an inexpensive air compressor at walmart, target , etc.....but at the gas stations you can get air....in California, its a state law that if the gas station has air, they have to provide free air to its customers. sometimes....you can stop at tire shops and they will fill it in for you for free....just ask...

How often should you get your air pressure checked in your car?
Sep 03, 2009 by I ♥ Longboarders! | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I feel my car tugging a bit, and I am pretty sure its not the alignment because I had it done a while back.
Also, you know the places like Discount Tires, that have the free air pressure check, do just roll into the garage? or park, get out of the car tell them what you want..etc
to have an accurate reading you need to check the pressure when the tires are cold and not driven on gages are cheap and its easy to do
wonderboy n | Sep 03, 2009
An air pressure tool is less than a few dollars.
Buy one, check it yourself on a regular basis.
Absolutely zero reason to require anyone else to do such a simple task.
Vipassana | Sep 03, 2009
You should check the tire pressure pretty regularly once a month or so and always check it when it starts to get cold because tire pressure drops in colder weather. As for a pull in place I'm not sure, maybe advanced auto, the one in my town will come out and check things. Get a tire pressure gauge of your own they are very usefull.
Ol Red | Sep 03, 2009
You need to change your oil every 3000 miles and rotate your tires about every 5000 miles this is a good time a lube center will do it for free when you have this done !!!

One of my tires leaks a little bit or air, why is this?
Apr 16, 2010 by Kurt | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Every time I check the air in my tires, the one tire is about 2 psi lower than the rest. The rest are all the same. I got aftermarket rims put on my car, but even before when I had steel rims on, that tire still leaked. Is there some kind of small hole in that tire. I got this tire put on my car back in May of 2009 and it still has 70-80 tread left? Is there any way of checking for holes without taking the tire off the car? Should I get this fixed or just keep adding air until the leak gets bigger (air by me is free, so its not a big deal)? Any advice would help. Thanks
Mix a batch of sudsy dishwashing liquid with warm water in a bucket...
Take the wheel off of the car...
Lay tire wheel combo on the ground in front of you... commence gently scrubbing with scrub brush and soapy water...
hint 1: thorougly check tire bead areas front and backsides...
hint 2: the smaller the leak the harder to find... [when bubbles form up and pop.. check that area very well]
hint 3: the wheel may be leaking, the sidewalls, or the tread area.
Repeat until all leaks are discovered and corrected...
Does this help any?

spray the tire down with soapy water and look for bubbles

Does anyone know of a law that makes air and water at gas stations, free to all customers?
Feb 06, 2008 by Nora B | Posted in Safety
As I put .75 cents into the air/water machine at the gas station for air to my tires, a stranger waiting said it was free. That all I had to do was ask the gas station cashier to turn on the compressor. He claims a law was passed a few years ago that makes this possible. That the ability to charge .75 cents is available for after hours service or machines that still stand since installed before the law was passed. Is this law real? Is it a national law or a state law? I live in California.
In California, air and water at gas stations is free to all customers. Thanks to a bill that was passed in 1999. This bill is called AB 531. The bill requires that all gas stations provide free air and free water during its working hours with the purchase of gas.
I take advantage of this service all the time. Regardless if I put gas or not, they always turn on the compressor for the air/water. Save your .75 cents.
Find the details of the bill.....

If a lawn mower service/repair shop told would inflate your tires for free..but charged anyways after.....?
Apr 05, 2011 by .^. | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
what would most say after this and why?
if took lawn mower into get blades sharpened and had asked if would inflate the tires.that had come off the rim and would they charge me and they said no..but when showed up to claim again..they told me it took them 1/2 hour to do it and were going to charge me as much for that as sharpening the blades?
how most would react and why?
had this yesterday..and even though i didnt think it was a big deal to ask them to do this for free..since they have all the air compression equipment and 4 hands there to easily inflate them..they acted like i was being a bad customer..when they had specifically told me they would not charge me..but i talked to the manager and he came off it..but said only this 1 time..and i told him that i just had asked at last minute and didnt think it was a big deal.
how common this sort of thing and again what would most do and why?
thanks for your answers!
I TOLD THE MANAGER THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST CALLED FIRST AND TOLD ME ABOUT THE CHANGE OF MIND BEFORE CHARGING ME?
If the tires were off the rims and it took them 1/2 hour to get them on and inflated, that's a lot more work than simply putting some air into them.
