Our test vehicle for this drive was a fully loaded Grand Cherokee Overland Summit 4X4 in Mineral Gray Metallic with Saddle and Black leather trimmed seating and interior. The base price of $42,995 includes a very complete range of standard equipment.
Functional performance items included Selec-Terrain Dial Control System, Quadra-Lift Air Suspension, Hill Descent Control, Electronic Stability Control, Parkview Rear Backup Camera, Park Sense Rear Park Assist System, Trailer Tow Group, Keyless Enter and Go, Hill Start Assist, Trailer Sway Damping and Rain Sensing Windshield Wipers.
On the outside, the Overland Summit is equipped with 20 X 8 inch wheels and tires, Command View Dual Pane Panoramic Sunroof, Power Liftgate with overhead lighting, removable LED flashlight and Smartbeam Headlamps.
Inside the Nappa leather trimmed saddle seats with black piping are heated both front and second row. The front seats are also vented for cooling. The driver and passenger seats are 8-way power with 4-way power lumbar adjust and include a full recline on the passenger side. The rear seats are a 60/40 split with one touch release and recline. The telescoping and tilt steering wheel is partially leather wrapped and fully heated with audio and cruise controls.
With $4 gas, local drivers scrimp
At a mere $3.99 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline at this particular BP, it could have been worse. At a BP station across town, at the I-75/Northwest 39th Avenue interchange, the price of gas Tuesday was $4.15 a gallon.
In a recently released AAA gas report, the average price for regular unleaded gas in Florida was $3.936 a gallon and in Gainesville it was $3.976. Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, said prices aren't expected to drop anytime soon. In fact, she said, prices are expected to rise with the summer driving season around the corner.
Hesser, a junior at the University of Florida, said while gas is this costly, he isn't filling up as often.
"I'm waiting 'til my gas is empty-empty," he said. "It's really depressing to see it fill up."
Michelle Stephey, a senior at UF, said she drives 10 miles to work from her residence on Sorority Row. She said she can't really give up driving her car regardless of how high the price gets. She said it's a fluctuating thing that she just has to deal with to get around town. Be it errands, events she has to attend or her job, Stephey said she tries not to think about how much her next tankful will cost.
