Tire roundup continues at Fairgrounds
FAIRGROUNDS — More than 6,000 tires have been dropped off during Kitsap County's "tire roundup," which started Sunday and will continue through the weekend before starting up again April 14, according to Chris Piercy, recycling coordinator for the county.
The roundup will take old tires from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds.
The second event is scheduled from April 14-22 inside Olympic View Industrial Park across Highway 3 from Bremerton National Airport.
A total of about 25,000 tires are expected to be recycled during the roundup, funded with a $45,000 grant from the Washington Department of Ecology plus $15,000 from county fees collected on garbage collection.
State and county officials are promoting the cleanup of tires, because tires do not break down in the environment and can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The tires are collected by Tire Disposal and Recycling of Auburn. The tires will be ground up to produce crumb rubber, which is used it rubberized flooring, or they will become an alternative fuel source in cement kilns.
